A city centre road which was closed by a sinkhole and due to reopen on Friday could be closed until early next week.

Rouen Road, at the end near to Norwich Castle, was shut in both directions when the hole opened underneath a car on Wednesday.

On Friday, Anglian Water had said repair to the road surface was near completion and the road would be reopened by 8pm on Friday night.

But by 10pm, the road was still closed.

On Twitter, Anglian Water apologised for the delay and said the road would be reopened by Tuesday 'at the latest'.

The hole was caused by a combination of a burst water pipe and the sandy ground in the area.

The ongoing closure is likely to cause traffic woes for those venturing to see Norwich City play Reading, with fans often using Rouen Road to and from games.

Repairs to the footpath on the road will not be completed until next week.
