Ten nights and nine days of round the clock work connected to the Norwich Northern Distributor Road will begin on the A1151 Wroxham Road tonight.

Wroxham Road will be closed to all traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians, from 8pm this evening until 6am on Monday, October 16.

And council bosses have warned the diversion routes are likely to become very congested, especially during peak hours.

The closure is to allow a drainage culvert through Wroxham Road to be built, and will also be used to complete as much work as possible on the NDR/Wroxham Road roundabout.

Traffic will (from the Norwich direction) be diverted along Norwich ring road on to Salhouse Road, with separate light vehicle and lorry diversions from Rackheath.

A Norfolk County Council spokesman said: 'The diversion routes are expected to become very congested, especially during peak hours, and traffic will also increase significantly on other routes in the area, including minor lanes.

'Norfolk County Council and Balfour Beatty apologise for the unavoidable disruption and inconvenience that this A-road closure will cause.'

First buses said the closure would cause 'major disruption' to Pink Line buses between Wroxham and Sprowston.

From tomorrow until Saturday, October 14, all morning and daytime journeys to and from Wroxham will start and finish at Sprowston Tesco. There will be no through buses from Wroxham to Sprowston, the city centre or the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

A shuttle service will operate approximately hourly between Wroxham and Sprowston Tesco which will provide connections to and from Pink Line 11 and 12 buses.

Some late afternoon buses towards Wroxham will be able to travel the full length of the route, but will be diverted via Rackheath with a significant increase in journey times.

Pink Line buses between Sprowston, the city centre and the hospital are unaffected by the closure.

Meanwhile, work on extending the north side pavement on Plumstead Road at Thorpe End will resume under temporary traffic lights on Monday.

The scheme, which includes a mini-roundabout and drainage improvements at the junction with Broadland Drive, will take four weeks to complete.

Elsewhere, after a short break following the re-routing of A140 Cromer Road traffic over the new bridge, temporary traffic lights will return on the A140 as needed.

The council said that was to allow as much work as possible to be carried out before a series of overnight closures (8pm to 6am) of the A140 to tie-in the existing road to the new junction.

That will begin on Monday, October 30. The number of nights needed will depend upon progress.

When complete, the NDR will stretch from the A47 at Postwick to the A1067 Fakenham Road. It is due to open in sections, with the first part, from Fakenham Road to Cromer Road, expected to open next month.
