If you found some unopened bottles of alcohol in a car park, apparently placed there as a New Year's 'gift to the public', would you take them?

That was the choice facing visitors to Sheringham's Morris Street car park - just behind the Sainsbury's - on January 1.

Among them was 75-year-old Wendy Maxwell, from Hellesdon, who drove to the north Norfolk seaside town for a brisk walk along the beach with members of her family.

Mrs Maxwell said she was surprised to find the stash of unopened bottles, which were lined up neatly next to a ticket machine.

She said: 'We were there about midday, and we saw these packets of beer, as well as spirits and Malibu, that sort of thing, all unopened.

'There must have been about £100 worth.

'It looked as though it was there for people to help themselves.'

Also there were cans of Carling and Stella Artois beer and a bottle of Baileys Irish Cream.

Mrs Maxwell added: 'We didn't take any, but then, when we came back from a walk by the sea, some of it had gone.'
