A suspected shell picked up by a boat off Great Yarmouth this morning has been confirmed as a 'non-explosive device'.
The dredger was on its normal route when it picked up the suspected ordnance and brought it on deck.
The Coastguard was alerted at 8.30am and a military disposal team was called.
The Gorleston and Great Yarmouth lifeboat was launched at 3.30pm to escort the team to the vessel, which was anchored about a mile and a half north east of the town's pier.
Paul Chaloner, from the lifeboat, said the item was a solid shot, practise round, believed to have been from the second world war.
Gorleston's all weather boat stood by as the round was checked over and was back at base by 4.50pm.
A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the item had been confirmed as a 'non explosive device'.
