On Monday evening a man in his 20s, named locally as Nick Rogers, was taken to hospital in a critical condition following an assault at the Morrisons supermarket.

Police have now confirmed Mr Rogers' has died and five people are under arrest. Floral tributes have been left outside the shop, which has since reopened. Mr Rogers' family are being supported by specially trained officers and a Home Office post mortem will be held in due course.

Three men, aged 19, 41 and 42 and a 19-year-old woman were arrested on Monday night in connection with the incident while a fifth person, a 43 year old man, was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning. All remain in custody.

A shopper described the 'shocking' moment she saw the injured man fall to the floor.

The 71-year-old, who did not want to be named, had just nipped into Morrisons to get a bottle of wine on Monday evening.

But as she got half-way down the store she heard a lot of commotion and turned to see a man hit the floor.

'I just saw the last little bit of him going down,' she said. I didn't know whether he had been hit at the time or if he was collapsing.

'He was on the floor and there was blood on the floor. There was a customer who was giving him mouth to mouth. The paramedics came and I think he stepped back.'

She said there was quite a few people in the store at the time of the incident and described how children were crying.

'People were shocked,' she said.

Another eyewitness at Morrisons said: 'There was a commotion in the store and the next minute I saw CPR being done on a man. It was very traumatic, there were lots of kids and families around. The store was evacuated.'

Detective Chief Inspector Marie James, from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, who is leading the investigation, said: 'While we're in the early stages, this is a fast paced enquiry and a number of people are currently being questioned. We believe the people involved in this incident are known to one another.

'The incident took place inside the supermarket where other customers were present at the time and given the rare nature of such incidents in this town, I fully understand how shocking this must be for the local community. To address these concerns local officers are carrying out increased patrols in the area.

'A number of witnesses have been spoken to but I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident and hasn't spoken to police to come forward. Equally, anyone who has information which they believe to be relevant to our investigation should get in touch.'

Anyone with information regarding the incident are asked to contact Norfolk Police on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
