The 17-year-old was remanded to local authority care until May 23, when he will also appear at Norwich Crown Court.
The charge follows the stabbing of Danny Norman in Old Bury Road, Thetford, while he was out walking with his fiancee and two young daughters on Mother's Day in March.
Mr Norman, who is in his 30s, was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in a critical condition with multiple stab wounds.
He has since been discharged and is in recovery.
