Dessert Lounge Norwich earns four-star food hygiene rating

Dessert Lounge Norwich, in Aylsham Road, was given a one-star hygiene rating by Norwich City Council after a food inspection on January 26.

Among the issues discovered were a range of safety breaches including uncovered meat slices with no expiration date and food being stored at incorrect temperatures.

Customers were assured that swift changes would be made and the venue has quickly bounced back. 

Ryan Griffin, who was appointed the new manager of the venue at the end of February, said he was "proud of the achievement".

The 29-year-old said: "We're delighted that after a reinspection on March 13 we've been awarded an impressive four stars.

"While we are proud of the achievement we're determined to appeal the rating in order to reach the coveted five-star status because the areas we fell short were minor and easily rectifiable.

"I think the previous inspection was harsh but I understand the emphasis on safety.

"We received a lot of support from the community and are really happy to have received a better rating now."

The city council is yet to publish the full report but the business was keen to publicise the news as quickly as possible.

In addition to the turnaround, the business has also added new seating for customers.

"We can now seat around 20-25 people inside to offer for anyone who wishes to sit in and eat with us," added Ryan.

The eatery will also be looking to launch a "special initiative" next month, offering free waffles to customers.

Ryan said: "Every third week of the month we'll be giving out free waffles to people as a way to express our gratitude for the ongoing support we've received.

"It also helps provide a meal for those less fortunate."
