Norwich Arts Centre, October 15

Promoters Twee Off bring Austin, Texas’s apocalyptically-named AYWKUBTTOD for a rare Norwich gig, with a re-jigged line-up and a relatively new, decidedly grungey melodicism added to their former tumultuous, percussion-heavy mix.

The band’s roots go way back to 1994 when long-time friends Jason Reece and Conrad Keely formed the band as a duo. Expanding gradually to a quartet, then a sextet, the band have been touring and recording as a four-piece once again in recent years.

Here they will be playing material from their latest (seventh) album, Tao of the Dead, a surprisingly forceful yet sophisticated album that evokes a refreshing nostalgia — paying faithful homage to prog-rock giants Pink Floyd, Rush and Yes as well as kraut-rock bands like Neu!, plus they experimented with celebrated indie producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead) on a 15 minute opus entitled Tao of the Dead Part 2.

They will also be debuting new material that the band started recording in Germany this year. Get ready for one gear-trashingly mental performance. Support comes from Leicester post-rock band Maybeshewill.

SHONEN KNIFE

Waterfront Studio, October 15

Cultish, long-lived, Nirvana- and Sonic Youth-championed Japanese all-girl punk-pop trio Shonen Knife stop off in Norwich for this date at the Waterfront Studio as part of a European tour promoting their recent album Pop Tune.

Formed in Osaka in 1981, when they first heard The Ramones, the band crafted their own idiosyncratic songs, fashioned brightly coloured outfits and DIY albums.

In 1985, K Records released Burning Farm in the US followed by further releases on Sub Pop which run them a cult following. In 1989 the crème of the alt. rock scene, including Sonic Youth, L7 and Redd Kross, covered their favourite Shonen Knife songs on the tribute album Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them.

Kurt Cobain was a particular fan, remarking: “When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old girl at a Beatles concert.”

They toured with Nirvana, The Breeders and as part of Lollapalooza. They recorded sessions for John Peel and even appeared on MTV’s Beavis and Butthead.

Pop Tune, released earlier this year, is their 18th studio album. Expect loud and buoyant guitars, rapid fire pop-punk drums and sweet harmonies. Support comes from Smallgang and Norwich’s Hello Bear.

FLUX PAVILION

UEA, October 17

Hot-off-the-heals of a limited sold-out UK run, Flux Pavilion — aka Josh Steele — returns to Norwich as part of a full UK headline tour.

One of this year’s hottest UK dance exports he is already making a name for himself having played packed out shows at Ultra and SXSW and a landmark show at Coachella.

The producer/DJ/multi-instrumentalist has garnered an enormous following among bass-addicts worldwide and has been catapulted into the limelight. His single Daydreamer, featuring Example, was a summer hit, while the official video racked up 700,000 views in the first week.

Genre-defining singles like Bass Cannon have meant he is finally getting the attention of the mainstream after being nominated in the BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll. Expect huge singles like Voscillate and I Can’t Stop from the dubstep master.

Support comes from LA’s Dillon Francis who almost out of nowhere has broken from the throng of young electronic music DJ/producers with a stream of world-class remixes, riding the current US dance music craze alongside the likes of Diplo and Skrillex.

THE JIM JONES REVUE

Waterfront, October 18

The Jim Jones Revue bring their blistering live show back to the Waterfront three days after the band releases their eagerly-anticipated third studio album The Savage Heart through Play It Again Sam/Punk Rock Blues Records.

The London band are a high octane, piano-driven, five-piece have been in the business a while, but they are only now coming to the attention of the wider audience they deserve.

Main man Jim was previously in a band called Thee Hypnotics and is heavily influenced by 1950’s rock‘n’roll and wanted to create the sound of a deep, screaming black vocal like Little Richard.

The Revue formed when Jim met like-minded soul guitarist Rupert Orton at Not The Same Old Blues Crap, the club he ran for folk with grittier blues tastes.

The Savage Heart expands the band’s sonic remit beyond their renowned brand of manic rock ’n’ roll to explore a virtual “heart of darkness” of new musical territory in the form of tribal stomps, field hollers, a capella rave-ups — even a fuzzed-out feedback-laden doo-wop ballad.

Notorious for their maniacal high-energy shows, The Jim Jones Revue have been described by MOJO as “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world right now”. Support comes from Honkey Finger and Electric Youth Revolt.
