More than two dozen Norfolk musicians are preparing to take part in an Olympic performance involving saxophonists from all over Europe.

Last night 25 local players got together for a rehearsal with organiser and composer Andy Sheppard at the Open music venue in Norwich. They are set to take part in the River of Music, a weekend of free music during the London 2012 Festival, alongside a further 175 musicians representing every country in Europe. It is not the first time the group has performed together having met as part of the Sax Massive – a collective of 200 local saxophonists – at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival last May. When they get together at Somerset House in London this July they will perform the same piece, which was written by Mr Sheppard. He said: “It’s a big celebratory piece which is not just a musical performance – it’s a community project. People can get involved whether they are complete beginners or professionals.” Among Norfolk participants will be Megan Burgess and brother Jacob, from Thorpe St Andrew. The 20-year-old hairdresser has been playing the sax for eight years. She said: “I feel quite lucky to be involved in it.”
