A packed Epic Studios witnessed the curiously wonderful Let's Eat Grandma play a homecoming gig last night in Norwich with support from Billy Clayton and Maya Law.

Alongside a drummer best friends Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth brought their experimental sludge-pop sound back to the city and entertained the crowd with keyboards, a saxophone, guitars and even a recorder.

Faux-naive, harmonised high pitched vocals and their weird lyrical content were delivered over inventive glitchy electronica and strident synths. It is a unique sound that has been popular since the release of their fantastic debut album 'I, Gemini' back in 2016. The gig coincided with the launch of their second album 'I'm All Ears' gaining rave reviews from the music press.

It was nice to see their trade mark pat-a-cake, hand clap routine a couple of times and their entertaining synchronised moves and theatrics. It seems to me they are attempting to emulate nobody and just be themselves on stage. Despite a couple of technical issues they remained un-fazed and showed what strong performers they are.

If you haven't checked out Let's Eat Grandma already then I would recommend beginning with their insanely catchy break-out single 'Eat Shiitake Mushrooms' before moving onto this years 'Hot Pink'. An upcoming tour encompassing Europe, Canada and the USA before finishing at Heaven in London tells you all you need to know about their growing success.

They are graduates of Norwich's excellent Access to Music so it was great to see the two support artists also chosen from their impressive ranks. Billy Clayton opened the evening in the 8pm slot delivering moody and low key ballads to an already decent sized and receptive audience. It was a confident performance followed up by Maya Law and her incredible Amy Winehouse-esque voice. She has a warm and likeable stage presence backed up by brilliantly written songs. Look out for her on the festival circuit this summer.

I hope Let's Eat Grandma bust the door wide open for future artists from Norwich. There has been a severe lack of successful artists hailing from this corner of England in recent years and I'd love to see more follow.

Tonight's performance signalled them stepping up a level and I expect to see them develop their sound and performances into something even more fantastic. Armed with their new music they have everything they need to be the artists who can blaze a trail and show the world Norwich is a vibrant hot bed of music and creativity.
