Last night was a first for Ed Harcourt headlining at the Waterfront – previous visits to Norwich have seen him supporting or playing the Arts Centre in St Benedict's.

To be honest, that venue suits his brand of orchestrated musical melees better than the King Street box, but that didn't stop his talent and that of his five-piece band showing through.

He started with some of the more pared-back songs from new album Strangers before the engaging Kids, but it was his back catalogue that really struck a chord.

Undertaker Stut became a little unstuck, but that was made up by a frenzied reworking of the normally understated I've Become Misguided and a dedication to John Peel: “Why Peel and not Dr Fox?” was Ed's question.

But it was a fantastic rendition of the aural overload that is Beneath the Heart of Darkness that properly touched a nerve. With a band playing instruments from violin to wind chimes – all with impressive dexterity – this was a gig that deserved a bigger audience than the half-full Waterfront.
