To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Norwich Fashion Week’s vintage day proved to be a royal affair. says Emma Harrowing.
Walking up the red carpet to be greeted at the door of The Library Restaurant by a Queen lookalike was an elaborate reception to the Dress Like a Queen vintage day at Norwich Fashion Week yesterday.
At 11.30am – a mere 30 minutes after the doors opened – the venue was buzzing with people dressed to the nines in vintage attire and pretty dresses, sipping tea and eating big slices of cake.
With bunting featuring pictures of the Queen and the Union flag, and a golden crown hanging from the rafters, it was time to have a right royal knees-up.
Organised by Blue Skies Vintage Events in Norwich, a quaint vintage fair featuring Kitty’s Hats, Jane Kenning, Antidote Vintage and Cupcake Jess fitted the bill for those looking for a vintage-inspired buy. Vintage tunes were played by a DJ to raise the British spirit.
There were three shows throughout the day. The first was by the knowledgeable vintage girls from Historical Sauces who treated us to a hair-styling demonstration on how to create the perfect beehive. The next was a make-up master class by beauty house Benefit on how to create a retro-inspired look.
Then it was time for the vintage fashion show (fanfare please).
Led by models wearing the fabulous corsetry designs by Drayton’s Jane Kenning, the models walked Parisian- style round the top balcony before gracefully walking through the restaurant.
Fashion from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, all reminiscent of some of the deades of the Queen’s reign, floated by.
Then there was the finale.
In a set befitting of a Sex Pistols gig in the late ’70s or early ’80s, models wearing original Vivienne Westwood circa 1977 to 1979 from Retreat Vintage and drinking cans of lager raised the roof to the punk band’s record God Save the Queen. It was all very Jubilee 1977.
These and many other outfits from the show made our highlights from the vintage day. See all the pictures from the Dress Like a Queen vintage day by clicking on the photo gallery link at the top right of this page.
