Olympic 200m bronze medallist and black power hero John Carlos is in Norwich tonight.
Extending gloved hands skyward in racial protest, U.S. athletes Tommie Smith, center, and John Carlos stare downward during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner after Smith received the gold and Carlos the bronze for the 200m run at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968. Mr Carlos and Tommie Smith’s black power salute on the 1968 Olympic podium sparked global controversy and remains one of the most memorable images of Olympic history.
The 61-year-old visited Norwich University College of the Arts ahead of the talk, to see the current exhibit of American graphic designer Lance Wyman’s work, which focuses on the Mexico 1968 Olympics.
He spoke with students about the controversial incident he is best known for.
