What a week it’s been.

Only a fortnight ago the temperature had risen, the lambs were being born and it felt like spring was on its way.

Whilst the weather reports may have been hinting at it, I’m sure no-one truly expected the snow impact would as great as it has.

It seems that when we have snowy periods like this, the pattern for how it plays out is often the same.

On day 1 and 2 it’s fun and lovely and we deal with it with a smile, by day 3 onwards it’s starting to really impact our lives and we wish it would just go away.

On the positive side, at least we see the very best of people during periods like this. All this week we’ve been reporting on story after story of selfless acts, heroism and bravery.

From the 999 and health crews who keep on going, to the volunteers armed only with a 4by4 and a shovel heading out to dig people out of trouble.

On a personal note, I’d like to praise my own editorial and newspaper delivery team for the way they have kept on going to make sure the public has as much information as possible.

Clearly I believe in the importance of local media at all times, but these last few days have really proven just how vital a resource we are for information and awareness.

We often hear talk these days that community spirit has disappeared but this week has proven that is anything but the case. All over our wonderful county people have been checking up on neighbours, clearing roads and pavements and getting well and truly stuck in.

I witnessed a great example of that just yesterday when I popped out to say hello to a group of around 15 people who were clearing paths at the sheltered housing complex Melbourne Cottages in Norwich.

They were doing it so a lady called Olive could get to a nearby cafe for her 90th birthday party. They’d even baked her a cake.

Even the coldest of hearts would have been melted by that one.

So well done all. It’s been the toughest of weeks, but we’ve once again proven what a great place this is to live, full of wonderful people. Hopefully now the worst is over and we can all enjoy a well-earned rest.
