One reader thinks 1940s themed events are in bad taste. What do you think?
Hear we had another 1940s weekend. Oh what fun!
The revellers did not understand or care that the 1940s were the bloodiest time in modern history. Millions lost their lives including hundreds of thousands of Britons: in the Blitz, in Dunkirk, in the fighting all over the world, in prison camps in Asia. Was that fun? After the fighting there was austerity with rationing and lack of housing. Was that fun?
I find it utterly distasteful to celebrate this blood-drenched decade with a carnival with dressing up and military posturing. It is like dancing on the graves of the victims.
