Do you want to build a snowman?

The girls planned to play in the garden but dad wanted a snowy adventure

Keola wanted to build a snowman, Thalia wanted to eat a snowman, I wanted to take pictures of them building, or eating, or generally having fun.

Daddy got involved – and off we went on a massive walking expedition to Wymondham, which he insisted was only just over a mile away.

With two children, one rather small, rather wonky, sledge and hills which weren’t steep enough to sledge, the girls weren’t convinced this was the best way to spend their (snow) day off from school.

But once Thalia realized that she could eat as much snow as she wanted and Keola discovered the endless fun of snowball fights, they were reasonably happy to indulge Daddy’s adventure idea.

There was endless amusement too. Not the thick snow-in-the-face blizzard that we walked in, nor the falling over and cracking our elbows, knees, hips and hands on the icy road, nor the trying briefly to take the cross country route and almost drowning Thalia in snow when the sledge sunk in a particularly deep bit.

Those bits weren’t great.

But when the sun came out, Norfolk was looking absolutely stunning. The happy dogs we saw, bouncing with glee in the white stuff were simply charming. We liked – and joined - the sledging children on possibly the smallest hill ever, and we appreciated the smiling motorists too, laughing at us throwing the girls up the banks or into the field, well out of their path.

We loved not having to be in the car, especially when we saw one out-of-his-depth driver get stuck three times in about 100 metres, another only miss a car at a junction thanks to the other’s quick reversing and several more skidding, sliding and wheelspinning.

It was a very long way and it took a very, very long time. But Thalia ate a huge amount of snow, Keola hit everyone with a snowball at least once and Rob found the Green Dragon pub was open and serving food. We ticked nearly everyone’s snow happy list - except my camera battery went flat – and arrived home absolutely shattered.

“Can we build a snowman now?” asked Keola.
