A big thanks to those involved in the NHS Home Ward in Norwich, I couldn’t have coped without you

I have recently suffered a bereavement and wanted to write a public thank you through the paper to all the staff involved on the NHS “Home Ward” in Norwich.

This is administered from the Community Hospital in Bowthorpe. It is a “virtual” ward enabling those who would otherwise be admitted to hospital to spend their last days instead, as comfortably as possible, in their own home but with professional support.

The support included carers (three or sometimes four times a day), nurses to administer drugs and an occupational therapist to ensure the right equipment was available (delivered by a caring NRS driver who set up a special bed in difficult circumstances).

Also “Swifts” who provided such an invaluable overnight care service when, on more than one occasion, I had to telephone for help.

In the middle of the night, as a lay carer, one can feel anxious and helpless.

I could not have coped in those six days on my own without them.

In addition, Doctor Dent and the staff at Oak Street Medical Practice have supported us for many years and linked us to the community heart nurse who, when the need arose in the last months, made regular home visits.

She liaised directly with the surgery (enabling revised prescriptions to be emailed through to our local chemist for collection) and arrangements made for nurses to visit for blood tests.

A thoroughly “joined up” service.

We hear and read a lot about the failings of the NHS, I have nothing but praise.
