Wymondham’s James McLachlan will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the European Junior Athletics Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, next week.

The 19-year-old will compete in the long jump – the event in which he won the English Schools title last year.

McLachlan, currently on a scholarship in the United States, recently completed a record-breaking season for his Chicago university Loyola, winning long jump and triple jump titles at the Horizon League Outdoor Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in both events.

His leap of 7.63m was a championship record – not only breaking one of Loyola’s oldest marks, set in 1969, but setting a new Scottish Under-20 record to send him top of the UK list by almost 30cm.

McLachlan, who has already appeared for Scotland’s senior team, said: “It’s always a huge honour to represent your country but the GB vest is the one I’ve been trying to get for a couple a years now, and I’m absolutely delighted to be going to the Euro Juniors.”
