Newcastle United look set to be without star midfielder Yohan Cabaye for tonight’s Premier League match at Carrow Road - but how will that affect Norwich City’s chances of beating the Magpies?

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The France international is heading to wealthy French club Paris St Germain in a deal worth an estimated £20m after expressing his desire to play Champions League football.

Cabaye, 28, is due to travel to Paris for a medical today and is expected to not be involved against the Canaries.

However, will his exit act as a boost for Chris Hughton’s side in the build-up to the game, or provide added motivation for Newcastle?

Cabaye had scored five goals in his last seven matches for the Magpies, in a season when he has scored seven goals in 19 appearances overall, as well as been credited with two assists.

According to WhoScored.com, the midfielder has fired in 63 shots so far this season, which ranks him sixth-highest in the Premier League with an average of 3.3 shots per game.

It is a further blow for the Magpies, who have several injury problems going into the match.

Striker Papiss Cisse misses out with a back injury, midfielders Yoan Gouffran and Gabriel Obertan are both ruled out by minor knocks and their skipper, Argentine centre-back Fabricio Coloccini, is out with a knee injury.

It means Alan Pardew has promoted 16-year-old local lad Adam Armstrong into his first-team squad for the match, who plays as an attacking midfielder or support striker.

But there could be a more obvious threat for the Canaries to be aware of, France international Hatem Ben Arfa.

The exciting attacker has been hindered by the form of Cabaye so far this season, restricting him to just nine starts, so could Pardew unleash his undoubted talents at Carrow Road tonight?

However the Newcastle boss decides to deal with the loss of Cabaye, he is frustrated to have lost his star man ahead of the match.

“We are a club that unfortunately at the minute, is not in a Champions League position, so therefore players can turn around to us and say they want Champions League, as Luis Suarez did with Liverpool,” Pardew said.

“He stayed, Suarez, and they have got themselves in a position for the Champions league, but they wouldn’t be there without him.

“It’s a Catch 22 situation: you need to keep your best players to get in there and likewise, they want to play in there, so you have got to give them some hope.

“That’s the position we really need to get ourselves into this year, or definitely next year or the year beyond.”

Do you think the loss of Cabaye will help or hinder Norwich City tonight? Share your thoughts, and score prediction, by leaving a comment below.

  • And incidentally, T_L_B, and others speculating on the amount of time Mattias has available - have any of you thought that he may, like Brew and me, be retired, and therefore have more time at his disposal? I don't know who he is, but his arguments suggest a good knowledge and vast experience, so this is entirely possible. Oh - and Hi to you too Brew! • Keep it up Mattias. I may not always agree with everything you say, but it's always well reasoned and adds to a sensible debate. You always make good points without resorting to childish personal attacks; and your replies to Lower Barclay and goldie are a case in point. Sometimes it is necessary to be a little verbose in order to develop an argument and put the point across strongly. If this makes those with a short attention span go to sleep - then all the better, since their contribution would be minimal, and gives the rest of us more time to read something worthwhile.

Mattias said early on that he never views the boards after 4pm, and CanaryontheMoon made the assumption that this was because he was at work, saying that he was glad Mattias didn't work for him. Lobbo later backed this up with some amusing speculation about what his job might be, to which Mattias responded by claiming he was a Trampoline tester - but I'm pretty sure he wasn't serious (!) :-P Barking Wise later was a bit more cruel with his theory, but Mattias merely laughed and changed the subject. I'm off to enjoy the game now - 2-1 to City! OTBC

Read my post again - I didn't say your post was childish; I simply said that Mattias333 "... always makes good points without resorting to childish personal attacks". His reply to you met your sarcasm with a little of his own - and did as you asked; while his reply to goldie simply turned the personal attack back to where it came from - very politely!. The only ones who "go on a little to much on these boards" are the boring "Hughton Out Brigade" (or HOBs), who just keep coming out with the same old claptrap with no new arguments or suggestions as to who would be an improvement to replace him if he were to go - if such a person were available and wanted to come here in the first place!

  • We do not need to worry about their team or tactics, we simply need to go all out for a win. My team would be a 4,3,1, 2 formation as follows, Ruddy, Olsson, Bassong, Bennett, Martin, Midfield three of Snodgrass, Fer & Tettey with Redmond playing in the hole behind RVW & Hooper. Redmond could then constantly switch positions, right left and centre and once he has run his socks off, then we can introduce Wes to add the icing to the cake.

Well, I posted something yesterday, he printed it, then he deleted it, so I posted it again and in the meantime he restored it. This morning he's deleted it again. Reason: "Other". Then he rejected it again. Reason: "Duplicate". He's obviously trying to upset me, just like the man at the local petrol station. This is why Mattias has plenty of time to post. And I for one admire his passion even if it does occasionally border on obsession.
