What would be your Norwich City starting XI at Fulham?

Who would make your Norwich City starting XI at Fulham? Who would make your Norwich City starting XI at Fulham?

Wes in the hole? Hooper or Van Wolfswinkel? The burning question this weekend will be who makes new Norwich City manager Neil Adams’ starting XI against Fulham.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Norwich City writer Paddy Davitt has chosen a 4-2-3-1 formation:

Ruddy; Martin, Turner, Bassong, Olsson; Tettey, Johnson; Snodgrass, Hoolahan, Redmond; Hooper

Neil Adams has spoken this week about big characters and there is none bigger in the Norwich dressing room than Michael Turner. Chris Hughton resisted the temptation to bring him back in and there is no doubt it would be a gamble for such a high stakes game, given he has not featured since January 1, but his experience would be a key factor and he usually has a calming influence on Seb Bassong, who has been as inconsistent as Norwich this season.

Wes Hoolahan’s inclusion in a central role and higher up the pitch requires some extra insurance behind him so you would like to see Alex Tettey and Bradley Johnson’s partnership revived to give Hoolahan the platform to link back to front.

Nathan Redmond would gives City a pace and directness on the counter and allied to Hoolahan operating in advanced areas ensure Gary Hooper is not isolated. Robert Snodgrass continues to look the only midfielder capable of carrying a goal threat so the Scot is a must on the right. Tough perhaps on Jonny Howson but by his own admission he would accept the last two games he has not been at his best and its all or nothing at Craven Cottage.

Sport reporter Mark Armstrong has elected a 3-5-2 formation:

John Ruddy (goalkeeper) City’s number one – a no-brainer for Adams.

Steven Whittaker (right back) Time to bring the Scot in from the cold – also allows Russell Martin to play at centre half.

Michael Turner (centre-half) City have missed his leadership at the heart of the defence this season. Willing to put his body on the line and attacks the ball well in both boxes.

Russell Martin (centre-half, captain) Centre-half has always been his preferred position and, from here, his reading of the game can really make a different to the City backline.

Martin Olsson (left-back) Has been one of City’s better performers in recent weeks. Needs to nurse that injured shoulder through to the end of the season.

Alex Tettey (midfield) City could really do with one of the bruising performances he is so capable of. Needs to dominate Steve Sidwell.

Jonny Howson (midfield) His absence has been a big miss this season. Adams must give the midfielder licence to get forward in support of the striker.

Nathan Redmond (left wing) The youngster has shown glimpses of what he’s capable of but he needs to start producing on a more consistent basis. Redmond is the only player in City’s squad with the kind of genuine pace that could trouble Fulham’s defence.

Wes Hoolahan (attacking midfield) Time to give the Irishman the freedom he needs to affect the game. When he plays well, so do City.

Robert Snodgrass (right wing) Has grown into a big presence in this City side. It needs to be one of those days when he delivers on set-pieces.

Gary Hooper (striker) Struggling for confidence but I still trust him to take a chance more than I do Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

  • 4 2 3 1 Ruddy, Martin, Turner, Bassong, Olsson, Howson, Tettey, Pilkington, Snodgrass, Hoolahan, Hooper - I would use Redmond as an impact sub for Snods probably (unless he plays a blinder) - and not leave it til the 79th minute a la Hughton.

  • My team in 2 -3 -5 formation would be Kennon, Thurlow, Ashman, McCrohan, Butler, Crowe, Crossan, Allcock, Bly, Hill, Brennan. The full backs and half backs to win the ball then feed inside forwards Allcock and Hill who pass to the wings where Crossan and Brennan use speed and trickery to get behind the defence and put crosses over for Bly to score. Where's my rattle. OTBC.

Let Neil do what Neil does and back him all the way. Even he he plays Bassong, Johnson and RVW, he needs everyone behind him, even if the above selection would require a few gritted teeth. OTBC.

  • Snods has been found out on the right. Put him on the blooming left to see if some of his crossing and improve. Our wingers cut in all the time and it's predictable and boring! Only Olsson has put in any decent crosses at all. Wingers should be hitting the touch line with the wingbacksfullbacks on the edge of the area for cut back options with balls being bombarded into the box. This hasn't happened and poor old RvW has had sod all to have a go at! You have to supply to score. Snods has scored a few free kicks and a few cut ins. Self-created granted, but predictable.

  • I don't care who plays on Saturday as long as they are committed to the cause......and as long as they don't do one of those silly huddle things before kick-off (see photo). The "huddle" is one of many tactics often deployed by Hughton this season which hasn't worked.

  • These sports reporters... they appear to have caught the Hughton bug and still want a left footed player, Snodgrass, to play on the right wing. I could never see the sense in it and for me that was just the epitome of Hughton's failed logic, team selection and set-up. Anyway the column is pure fantasy because Neil Adams is the only man who will pick the team! I will leave it to him. I trust in him!

Plus he is not a leader...something we have lacked all season. Personally I would play Yobo with Russel Marttin and make Martin captain.

I really cannot understand why anybody would want to play RVW in a must win game that is for sure, he has 1 goal so far whereas Snodgrass has 6. I would have Bassong, Elmander, RVW, Hoolahan and Redmond on the bench so that a plan B could be used if things are not going our way.

  • I dont think this is a pointless article, it "What team would YOU choose" isnt it? Personally I cant pick a team, and why? Because I dont think Hughton got the best out of our players and didnt really know what to do with them. Leave Bassong out because he didnt look interested? Yeah towards the end of CH reign... He was once our rock. Drop Ricky? He didnt get the service that he's used to when playing for his old club. I could go on. The fact is, although i was a Hughton inner until the last few months. Ive come to the conclusion that all these people wanting him out weeks before me were right. With a new manager that has been watching from the sidelines, im seriously hoping that all these things are going to be eventually sorted out and he picks a team and makes the badly needed tweaks and changes and maybe, just maybe, we can get out of this dogfight at the bottom and look forward to exciting and entertaining football again. The team I pick is the one where we are flowing, our strikers score goals at last and our back four look in tune to each other. Neil Adams, i have faith, all the very best of luck. OTBC!!!!!

The choice of Pilks over Snoddy was a tough one, but I feel an unexpected change will help rattle Fulham. Agreed - Would love the 4-2-3-1 to return, when we've used it we've looked good!

I wonder if they have to be fitted with steel toe caps to protect the metatarsals from the megarascals. And maybe lanyards with bar codes to enable them to access the dressing room? In my day you could wear any colour football boots you wanted.......as long as they were black. Oh well, if we get 3 points down by the river tomorrow, who cares?

The players all know each other, the pitch varies, but roughly the same, so basically it comes down to whether millionaires, or "thousandaires" play better in front of people who either shout or cheer? Really?

Meanwhile, Mark Armstrong who calls himself a "Sports Reporter" (and is presumably paid for being such) opts for 3 across the back (which in itself is nonsense) and then names 2 centre backs and 2 full backs. I wonder what sport he normally reports on. I doubt it's football.

  • My team suggestion would be as follows: Ruddy Olsson (LB), Turner (CB), Bassong (CB), Jonas (RB) Tettey (DCM) Redmond (ALM), Hoolahan (ACM), Snodgrass (ARM), Hooper (CF) The Wolf is clearly low on confidence, right now if we get a chance we need to take it and I think Hoops would be more likely to do that. He also doesn't mind a shot from distance. Jonas at RB is a little different, but he can bring an attacking element like Olsson. Wes behind Hooper works if he gets the freedom to do as he pleases, Hooper knocks the ball down to an advancing Hoolahan to take it past one and fire a shot in - or Wes sees the pass as Hooper breaks from the shoulder of the last defender. Redmond is raw, his end product is sometimes missing but pace is key and a full back with Redmond running fult tilt at him is not a happy full back. We would have the likes of Howson on the bench if we need to push on an Johnson if we were shutting up shop.
