Norwich City have been touted with moves for Arsenal’s Spanish centre back Ignasi Miquel and Lazio’s Michael Ciani to bolster their backline following Ryan Bennett’s ankle surgery.

City boss Neil Adams made it clear the club would have to look at reinforcing their defence over the closing days of the transfer window with Russell Martin, Michael Turner and new signing Carlos Cuellar the only fit senior centre backs in favour.

Sebastien Bassong has not been involved with the first team in the opening weeks of the new season, with Kyle McFadden making his competitive first team debut alongside Cuellar in the 3-1 midweek Capital One Cup win over Crawley Town.

Miquel is a 21-year-old centre back who is approaching the final year of his current deal at the Emirates. The Spanish youth international has made 11 appearances for the Gunners since making his Premier League debut in 2011 including experience in the Champions League and Capital One Cup but his last first team outing for Arsene Wenger’s squad came in a 1-0 Premier League win at Sunderland in February 2013.

Miquel would appear to be well down the pecking order at the Emirates with Arsenal bringing in the likes of Southampton’s teenage talent Calum Chambers during the summer and the Spaniard spent last season on loan at Championship title winners Leicester City, where he scored once in 12 appearances.

The 6ft 4in tall Barcelona-born Miquel spent five years at the Catalan giants’ fabled La Masia academy but following his release was picked up by Arsenal.

Ciani was previously linked to Norwich under Adams’ predecessor, Chris Hughton. The 30-year-old French international is also in the final year of his current contract with the Romans and Gazzetta dello Sport claimed on Thursday both the Canaries and Premier League Stoke City have enquired about the cenre back’s availability.

City have until Monday evening (11pm) before the summer transfer window closes but they can tap into the loan market as well from later next month.

  • I once received a letter at Greene King, addressed to "Bunny Street Edmonds". It was from a Professor P!ssarski, Head of The Deparment of Brewing Science at Bucharest University. Honest! He concluded the letter, charmingly, "Thanking you in anticpance, Yours sincelery..."

  • Perhaps we should ask Neil Edmans to adjudicate on this. Deal or no deal?

  • Colin, if you think Bassong is on 20k a week youre wrong, more like 60k. If hes a bad influence then get rid and if Palace want him for 2 mil we should take it. Good player when he wants to be, but clearly not getting back under Adams.

  • Ciani looks like a useful addition, Have to agree with Colin that 12 appearances for Leicester last year means he wasnt that good for regular football and we want to get a settled pairing all bar injuries.

  • I think the jury is still out on Lafferty. He has to start taking chances. OK, Grabban is scoring, but you cannot put all eggs in one basket. We cannot carry a striker who is not going to knock in 15-20 goals over the season.

  • Hughton's success in completing dismantling our club's style of football and passion would appear to have been noted around the country ..he doesn't seem to get a mention for any vacant posts. He was nowhere near the Palace job and doesn't appear to be on Leeds radar. My despondency with our transfer dealings have disappeared..I believe Adams has made some great signings so far and hopefully the Belgian lad will join shortly. I would love to see Hooper stay..I genuinely believe he is a great striker - he just needs the chance to show it. My gut feel is we will lose either Hooper or Redmond by Monday ..I wouldn't be devastated if Redmond went, with 6-7m going in the bank ready for reinvestment in January. Great start to the season..when was the last time we won 4 games on the bounce?

  • nmtd, I would`ve corrected cutty but not in public! Jim Redman was a superb motorcycle racer of the 50\60s-ish. I`m feeling quite benign. A few lovely pints in the unhostile Hostileries of our Fine City. IGNO: Step up to the plate. Your SLOBS await you - now! cutty; a retro-session in the Iron Duke\Welly. Groundhog material. As a Norwich born g!t of 1948, I felt I`d climbed into H.G.Wells` Time Machine. Does nobody evolve from their parents\grandparents?? `Young` guys were older than I am. Weird.

Sometimes less right than others, but never wrong. Interesting potential signings on the horizon though. Perhaps this window may prove to be the Adams family's finest hour to date.

  • I'd be happy if we signed both. You can't have too many centre-halves really, not in this league with games every 3-4 days. So if we have 6 in the squad in Bennett, Turner, Martin, Ciani, Cuellar & Miquel, that'd be about right, especially as two of those players can play right-back. I don't think any would be lacking game-time.

  • I think with Jerome joining us and Becci easing his way back into contention plus young Murphy on fire then Hooper will be on his way, and maybe Redman too now we have Mac G. Like a game of chess this transfer malarkey. Have to call it the Redman Gambit, but will it be accepted or declined?

  • Absolutely, Winger63. No one wants Bassong. He's probably on too much money and his reputation has spread around Europe. Let's hope he only has a year left on his current deal, as I would expect he's probably on about £20k a week.

  • On the contrary, I'd be more than keen to keep hold of Hoops, I believe he adds something extra to the current strikers we have, playing off the shoulder and an instinctiveness, a natural goalscorer aka poacher ! OTBC

  • 6'4! A strong CB if they get him. McFadden seems promising too. Not sure i care too much about Bassong, he's part of that Premiership era that was tainted with misery. All of a sudden, from being fairly despondent things are picking up all over the shop. I can tentatively say I'm excited.

  • Just 12 appearances for Leicester would suggest he's not that good. Better to improve the quality rather than the quantity of centre-halves in our squad. Whatever we do, I hope it's a permanent signing rather than a loan.
