Thetford played host to the first round of the annual Quad Kids athletics competition with athletes from Norfolk’s top clubs making the journey to the event held on Thetford Grammar School’s sports field.

The monthly four-event series also takes place in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and King’s Lynn and involves athletes from school years four through to eight taking part in four athletic disciplines including a sprint, middle-distance run, throwing event and long jump.

Last week’s event in Thetford broke the record for the number of athletes taking part at a Quad Kids meeting with over 80 youngsters competing.

Thetford athletes turned out in force and led the way in many of the disciplines.

There were overall event awards for two local athletes at the end of the day with Harley Swan winning the year six, seven and eight category, notching up 259 points over the four events, followed closely by Thetford’s Adam Moore who finished up in the runners-up spot with 249 points.

Sam Rolph finished just outside the medals in fourth with 229pts whilst Tyler Howard clocked up 112pts for 11th position.

In the girls year six, seven and eight competition, Jessica Norkett led the charge for the Thetford athletes, finishing in fifth place to earn 177pts.

Emma Coppin finished in seventh place with 174pts followed closely by sister, Claire Coppin who finished in 11th with 171pts. Cerys Brotherhood was 13th with 157pts with Holly Goymour notching up 132pts for 16th position.

In the year four and five competition, Cameron Try narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth with 201pts, one of only four boys to reach the 200pts mark. Josh McGuire finished in 10th place with 177pts followed closely in 11th by Jaydyn Lott with 168pts.

In the girls years four and five event, Abigail Clouston earned 105pts to finish in 22nd place.

The next round of Quad Kids takes place on Sunday, June 22 at the UEA Sportspark in Norwich and is open to any child within school years four to eight.

Thetford athletes were also in action at a recent evening meeting, the Cambridgeshire AA Development Open Meeting in St Ives.

Aiden Try, taking part in the second of four 800m races which saw athletes of mixed ages and genders competing against one another based upon previous personal best times, finished in second place, clocking a PB of 2:19.57, with Joe Smythe in 10th in a time of 2:32.80.

Kieron Moody triumphed in the third 800m race, winning in a PB of 2:27.99 with Tom Mead also recording a PB as he crossed the line in fifth with 2:37.92.

Cameron Try finished in second in the U11 long jump with a distance of 3.36m, missing out on first place by just 5cms.
