Chris Hughton has confirmed Leon Barnett’s future could lie away from Norwich City.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The powerful defender did not fly out to America for the Canaries’ three-date tour of the USA and Hughton admitted Barnett does not feature in his Premier League plans.

Barnett still has a year left on his current Carrow Road contract and Hughton insisted any potential parting of the ways would be amicable.

“At the moment he is not in my plans. He has shown a desire to play regular football and of course I can understand that,” said Hughton. “He went out on loan to Cardiff and what he would like to do is go and play somewhere where he is going to start on a regular basis.

“That is simply the only reason we have not brought Leon out here to America. He is a good trainer, he works hard every day and I have no problems on that score but certainly at this moment he is not one that would be in my plans for the season.”

Hughton delayed his own departure for the USA to work on attracting fresh talent to the club after a productive summer in the transfer market, but the City chief had a word of caution for those expecting imminent arrivals.

“Anybody putting two and two together would certainly get the wrong number. I did delay my arrival but what I would say about that is we have a responsibility to improve the squad where and when we can,” he said. “That is what we continue to try and do. What I can say is there are no done deals but certainly the reason I came away a little bit later was because I felt I needed to be in the UK as we try to do some business. But certainly at this moment, no done deals.”

City have been heavily touted with moves for Italian-based strikers Fabio Quagliarella and Maxi Lopez as they bid to add fresh firepower.

“Yes, I have seen the reports that I was in Italy,” said Hughton. “There are players that we would have an interest in bringing to the club but wanting to bring someone here and actually getting them here is two different things. The areas that we felt we needed to improve were the offensive areas. We brought Ricky (van Wolfswinkel) in but on the other side of it Simeon (Jackson) and Holty (Grant Holt) have departed so, yes, the forward area is one we are looking to do something.”

  • just looked at a couple of U-Tube videos of Maxi Lopez. They were old and just a snapshot, but make him look clumsy. One was just showing his fouls from 6 years ago - made him look very clumsy. I for one hope Becchio and Murphy(s) come good and we can save a little money

  • It it just that CH is a very calm man or does he not realise that we are desperate for strikers right now having shed so many at the end of last season, especially if you also take KK into account. I am not convinced the Hooper is a must have but he would surely be better than nothing. I suspect we only have to match QPR's offer and he would be ours. Alternatively, perhaps we could offer one of our fringe players as a make weight as we now have an abundance of midfielders. I just hope we do not see a repeat of last September whereby we grab a Spurs youth at the last moment only to see him injured as soon as he got game time.

However as he refuses to play in a shirt showing the name of a money lender, could he play in front of stands named after Barclays or Norwich & Peterborough, wicked userers as they obviously are? Hope Becchio makes it but a word of warning to him: "If you score too many preseason goals, you may find yourself shipped off to the championship on loan!".

  • waclor, you are right., Lennon does seem flaming hard work. I wonder where he would stand if Hooper point blank refuses to go to QPR?? Assuming you guys mean the Cisse who was at QPR, I hope we dont go for him. I think he has had 8 clubs in the last 8 years which shows how well he fits in wherever he goes. He just signed for Kuban Krasnodar two weeks ago so I think its highligh unlikely.

  • Perhaps the longer it goes on the more chance we have of landing Hooper because as HC suggested, maybe he is holding out for us. I have mixed feeling about him still. Not sure he is the real deal but I am perhaps warming to him a little as the striking situation is looking a bit dire. We were short of strikers last season and since then we let Holt, Vaughan, Jackson and Kamara leave with only RVW coming in!! When asking for fees clubs will have us over a barrel as they will know we are desperate.

  • I for one would give KK another go if the price was right after all CH decided to play him as the lone striker for a number of games instead of Holt so he cannot be all bad. Likewise he was ahead of LB in the pecking order. I was not aware that Barney had not travelled to the USA so we really are short of central defenders over there, does that mean Ayala will get plenty of game time or will RM fill in at times.

  • If Butterfield is to be a serious contendender for the first team, now is the time to find out. His previous manager considered him to be the 'cream of the crop', and his teammates, a 'cracker of a player'. As yet, he has had little chance to indulge in the crisp interplay for which he is noted. Hughton will be keen to make sure that he is not deployed in a roll that spreads him to thinly. He may also be reticent about throwing him in at the deep end, given his history of knee ligament damage. Sooner or later, Butterfield will be keen to make his mark, if only to make sure that his future does not leave him picking up crumbs. Personally, I hope his career blossoms, and that he makes it to 'the hall of fame'. He should then consider reinventing himself in the restaurant business. I confess that in all the many times that I have been to Carrow Road, I have yet to venture in to 'Yellows', but if it were to rebrand itself as 'Butterfields', I might just be a little more curious. Piccalily anyone?

Also maybe less playing time for little 'Benno' as we now have 'Pilks', 'Redders' and 'Snods'. Did you know that Snodgrass was also the name of one of the Wombles (whatever happened to to Wombles) along of course with Great Uncle 'Bulgs', 'Tobes', 'Orri', Bungs' and 'Welly'. According to wikipedia which I always use for my "facts" she was the female the accountant of the wombles, known for her foul smell and habit of wagging her tail when she is lying. Canary West, with regard to Hooper, it does seem as though he doesn't want to join the massed ranks of the Sheperd's Bush Rangers, otherwise he'd have surely gone by now. There might be some provisional agreement that he is joining City, that will be confirmed once the pre season tour is over. What do I base this speculation on? Nothing more than a hunch. No, the penny has dropped, he is waiting to see who comes in with the best offer. That's ok, but if he pushes his luck, he might find neither club wants him. What I would say though is that a Canary in the hand is definitely worth two in the bush.
