Russell Martin relishes the return of that winning feeling – now he wants momentum for Norwich City

Russell Martin was open about the fact it felt a while since Norwich City last tasted competitive success – although even he was slightly taken aback at the news the Canaries’ last win came in March.

And off the back of what felt like an opening weekend wobble at Wolves, there may well have been relief dancing with the delight of earning a comfortable three points on their Carrow Road return.

For once, there’s no hiding or down-playing what City want to achieve this season – and Martin is clear on what will get them there.

“It feels like a while – it’s been a while as well, but the win feels great and it’s nice to get that feeling back,” beamed the City skipper. “I said to the boys in there, hopefully this is the start of something now – especially at Carrow Road. We need to get this place going and when we’ve got a bit of momentum, as we proved last time we were in this league, it counts for a lot.”

While Martin Olsson’s red card at Wolves deserves to be a caveat in that opening loss, Joel Ekstrand’s third-minute dismissal will do likewise for City’s dominant efforts over Watford – a first win since the top-flight victory over Sunderland at Carrow Road on March 22.

“Even though Watford went down to 10 men early, I thought we dealt with it all really well,” said Martin. “The game got a little too open in the first 10 minutes of the second half but apart from that, everyone was really good and we let the ball do most of the work in the second half. So hopefully that’s saved a bit in the tank for Tuesday (v Blackburn).

“We had a chat about Sunday and we were pretty realistic about it. We didn’t start well and in the second half we were coming into the game, felt we were starting to dominate – and then the game turned on a decision. We still had a couple of half-chances after that but it wasn’t as bad as some people have made out.

“We’re a pretty level-headed group. We analysed it, got over it really quickly and knew what we had to do this week at home – and fortunately we’ve done it.”

For Martin, the evidence backed the red card: “I didn’t see the incident but I’ve seen Nathan’s (Redmond) nose, so I know he’s caught him – but I don’t know if it was intentional.

“People say it’s harder playing against 10 men but I thought we dealt with the situation really well and came through with flying colours.”

The last word was saved for the man who knew all about waiting for a win – Saturday was Neil Adams’ first as City boss from game seven.

“Him and the staff deserve this because performances have been so improved since he came in – we’ve deserved a win before now,” added Martin. “To get it now is good for him and for us. I’m sure he’d say himself he’s a bit relieved, but also I’m sure he knew with the lads he’s got and the performances under him, it was going to come sooner or later. Thankfully it’s come now in front of a home crowd.”

  • Daily Express reporting that QPR have signed Leroy Fer. Words are 'He (Redknapp) expects to strengthen his QPR side with at least two more signings, in addition to capturing Leroy Fer for £8 million yesterday'.

  • MNTD The way the Europeans play football is more suited to RvW than with us. He'll do well there but if he comes back here......it will be the same story I'm afraid. Liked the song titles Lincs but previous poster is right Blackburn will be tougher than Watford so Tuesday and then 'Down the Road a Piece' will really give us a clue as to where the season is going. One defeat did not our season make and one win is the same....OTBC

  • CrazyCanary, you're one of very few saying good things about the board but not too upset myself either. We need a quality defender (or 2) but otherwise i think we're in decent shape. Very tired of all the negativity around these boards and hope a couple more wins might sway that sentiment somewhere more positive. Many more ups and downs to come and need to show much more patience than shown so far.

  • Crazy, spending £16m on players sounds like a Theme for a Dream to me. It's not reality. O'Neil may be a good player but probably not an Apache on Leroy Fer.

  • We have a game on Tuesday, that will be a tougher test than yesterday I feel. Morale should be high especially as Adams has broken his duck and we have proven we can win. And we can score goals. News on bringing in a couple of talented back four players would be welcome or else we may have to call on the dubious talents of Bassong.

  • Am I the only one that thinks the board have done well this summer? 16m for Snoddy and Fer would be great business - plus getting Pilks out, who clearly didn't want to be here any more. We need more cover all over the park - especially defensively, but If we enter September with Ruddy, Redmond, Hooper and Olssen still here and spend that £16m wisely (Grabban and Lafferty are good additions so far) then we'll be in good shape. Its a big 'if', but so far so good in my opinion. OTBC

  • When McN gets back from his Summer Holiday, In the Country, let's hope he holds on to our best players or we will be relying on the Young Ones. Message to NA is Don't Talk to Him. Message to McN, if you tell Fer to Move It, you will be A Voice in the Wilderness, and if you Constantly sell our stars then The Minute You're Gone can't come soon enough.

  • NA is not empowered to make those calls, Dubya. You know that. Don`t talk up that 1p5wich stuff - asking for trouble. We had Lambo & Holt in those heady days. IP0 NR1 will do me! Wac is right; we are a bit short of decent defenders. If Surman, Fer and Tettey all join Pilks in the exodus, we are short of midfielders too. Robert was no great loss, quite the opposite. Any views on Gary O`Neil? Early days, perhaps. News will explode tomorrow. All will be revealed. All the ins & outs resolved. That`s what Machianalli is busy doing, and why he has been so conspicuous by his absence. Of course, he could just be holidaying at Sir Cliff`s place in Portugal.

  • Much more important than any of that is the recruitment of a centre back and right back. We WILL have suspensions and we WILL have injuries and we do NOT have enough quality or cover. As Clueless Chris would say: "We lack a bit of quality in the furst furd". Get on it Adams.

  • Lets not get carried away. The 3-0 win against Watford was very welcome (especially after the Wolves debacle). We have some important issues this week to deal with. Firstly on Monday holding onto Fer and NA firmly announcing that he is NOT for sale ! Tuesday should then be followed up with another good home win against Blackburn Rovers. Beyond that there is the little issue of improving on the 5-1 roasting that we gave the six-fingered chumps down at Portaloo Road the last time we went there. If this week pans out week we can be top of the table this time next week with Fer moving forwards as a NCFC player ! OTBC
