Norwich City have been strongly linked with a £2m transfer swoop for Lazio central defender Michael Ciani.

Reports in the Italian media on Monday afternoon claimed the Canaries are poised to open talks over a possible deal for the 29-year-old who is contracted to the Roman giants until 2015. City signed Spanish defender Javier Garrido on a permanent deal last summer from the Biancocelesti after a successful season-long loan stint at Carrow Road and Lazio officials have apparently indicated they are ready to discuss a move for Ciani.

The powerful defender was linked with Celtic last summer after his first season in Italy following a 2012 move from Bordeaux where he made 91 appearances in a three-year stint that also saw him feature in the French club’s Champions League campaign in 2010. Ciani has one full cap for the French national side in a 2-0 friendly defeat to Spain back in 2009 after progressing through their youth ranks.

The Canaries only have two senior recognised centre-backs available at present with Sebsatien Bassong and Ryan Bennett featuring in the weekend’s 1-0 Premier League win over Hull City. Michael Turner is likely to be out for ‘several weeks’ after injuring his hamstring at Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day whilst Dani Ayala is expected to extend his loan stay later this week at Championship club Middlesbrough. Chris Hughton has so far only brought in Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez on loan in the current window, which closes on January 31.

  • Wouldn't surprise me if Elmanders loan was canceled considering the reports ive heard and seen with my own eyes regarding his discontent. Add the fact Becchio has suddenly been remembered and used only backs up my hunch.

  • Elmander unhappy (good, he might go), Becchio unhappy (shame, never given a chance til too late), Hoolahan unhappy (can't think why), Delia's unhappy (her team is not rising as well as her soufflés),Hughton's unhappy (see photo above), I'm unhappy (probably the tablets), everyone's unhappy. What a great time to be alive.

  • A loan deal wouldn't mean Elmander had to go back. "Premier League rules limit clubs to just two season-long domestic loans but international deals are, essentially, limitless." Even I'd he does, city would surely still want 4 strikers especially with the way injuries have gone. Fans may not like Elmander but I almost all of Hoopers goals have come playing along side him

  • Matthias GossV, still firmly believe Becchio should have been given a chance already. His short cameo in the WBA game at the end of last season looked promising. Not worried whether Elmander stays or not.

  • Elmander is an international and only got caps because of his abilities. The question is: if he could perform at international level why isn't he shining with us in the Prem? I think the answer must, once again, come down to the way Hughton sets up his team and a failure to utilise players to their strengths. I also agree with those who believe Becchio has more to offer than many fans feel. He had a good cameo in last season's game against West Brom. Incidentally that was the game when, for me, Howson started to show his class. The sooner we can get him fit again the better we will be. As for Ciani I also don't know anything about him but again you don't play for a leading Serie A club unless you are very useful!

  • That`s interesting, Mattias & Goss. Elmander wasn`t in the squad at all on Saturday. He has had a lot of game time. I don`t know if we are able to curtail his loan. Does anybody know? If his objective for coming to Norwich was to highlight his credentials for Sweden`s World Cup campaign, that`s over now, isn`t it? Portugal knocked them out in a qualifying play-off? About time Becchio was remembered. He has a nice touch on the ball, a bit like Teddy Sheringham.

  • Brewer, get this. Posted something about season tickets last week which Archant declined because it was a "duplicate" (even though they hadn't printed it the first time!). You warned me that some hack might nick my idea. Undeterred I wrote something similar about season tickets which included an anonymous warning about plagiarism by you know who. This one they did publish.....but.....wait for it.....today they said it had been rejected because it was "inaccurate" (even though they had already printed it!) I suppose that given enough time with a keyboard, those lovable creatures at Archant might come up with the works of Shakespeare. Meanwhile I feel another poll coming on: who would be a better Norwich manager? Hughton or the Archant Moderator. VOTE NOW.

  • Oh, and by the way, the rumours linking Calderwood with the manager's job at rock bottom Northampton persist over there. He was at the club before and as far as I am aware still lives in a village just to the north of the town. But I hasten to add, before anyone gets excited, it is only from posting on the local paper's blog site!

  • As for Calderwood, I hope that he goes so that we have a chance at getting a more attacking coach in to address the clear flaws in our game. I saw the game a Carrow Road against Fulham and Elmander played very well that day linking play and working hard for the team. He did look short on confidence though in front of goal.

First Prize; an "I Beat the Moderators" Propelling pencil and pen set. Runners-up get a rubber with which to erase their own postings. Blankety blank. • Some great comments on here guys. As for the Archant moderator, he rejects more of my comments than are printed, usually for duplication when he didn't print them anyway. With regard to Elmander, I think the fans have been a bit harsh on him since he worked very hard for this team and is obviously only allowed to play in the Hughton style i. e no flair, no forward passing andf definitely no scoring of these goal things that people keep talking about. About Ciani, well he looks a decent player, but like many of our international signings by Hughton, he and his coaches will soon have all the football ability out of him

  • At 6ft 2 ins tall he is not one of the tallest centre backs around but if he can play either side of the centre back pair then may be a useful addition. Currently we have a 23 man squad so would still have a spare place for a decent target man. I would not like to see Elmander go unless we sign a replacement that is for sure. Mind you, I would have given Kia Kamara a short term contract as he was exciting to watch so what do I know.

  • Apologies for slow response. In terms of Elmander, hes clearly a decent player, you dont get that many international caps and praise from a certain zlatan for nothing. Hes never been a 20 goal a season striker, but hes also anything but a traditional lone target man. His sarky clap when getting subbed the other week and then further refusal to shake hands and storm off down the tunnel likely didnt go down well. The fact he wasnt in the squad saturday and further more the fact nobody actually cared enough to wonder where he was only points in one direction for me. In terms of canceling the loan. Usually we the club can cancel the loan if a# the player agrees to it or b# we've no set up agreement to cover the players wages etc. The only other option is the sign said loaned player (scary!). Wait and see I suppose. Shame as with the 2 loans were allowed I would have hoped at least one loan would be an exciting up and coming player from a top 5-6 club who can get in there. Either way as long as we bring in quality ill never moan, regardless of what position it is. Any proven quality is good right?

He should be grateful for the amount of premier league game time he has had in my opinion...regarding Ciani, a centre back of his pedigree would be just what the squad needs, surely? although I cant say Ive seen him play so if someone can enlighten me that would be great..

  • Hooper would benifit massively (as well as RVW) from playing with a real, traditional target man. Hughtons tactics have never been easy on the eye at Newcastle or Birmingham (in fact it got him sacked at Newcastle) but hes always played with a traditional target man and achieved decent (ish) results despite it not being easy on the eye like I said. He needs that kind of player to compliment RVW or Hooper (who ever starts). Problem is us fans have to understand that 'real' target man is in the side to score 20 goals a season, hes there to work within a tactic Mr Hughton wants to play. Until we find that kind of striker Hughtons tactics simply wont work like they have at Newcastle & Birmingham. Silly thing is, I believe if he could find that target man his tactics would work even better than at Newcastle or Birmingham simply because he never had a RVW or Hooper there. Need to get the best from them. Playing as we are simply isn't. Its almost like were playing with only 9 men.
