Norwich City’s reported January transfer target Jonas Gutierrez has revealed he is set for a Newcastle exit.
The 30-year-old Argentine has been touted with a possible Carrow Road move and a reunion with his former Magpies’ boss Chris Hughton, along with rumoured interest from Championship promotion hopefuls QPR, and Gutierrez confirmed on Saturday he no longer features in Alan Pardew’s plans.
The experienced midfielder used his personal Twitter account to thanks Newcastle’s fans for their support as he prepares to leave St James’ Park.
He tweeted: “Thanks for the messages. I enjoyed my five years at the club, I hope the club finish the highest this season and the best to my team mates. It was an honour and a pleasure to play with the Newcastle shirt and to have the support of the Geordies.”
Gutierrez and Manchester United wide player Wilfried Zaha have both been linked to Norwich with Hughton in the market for midfield reinforcements following injuries to Elliott Bennett, Alex Tettey and Jonny Howson. The Daily Mail claim City are in pole position to win the race with a fee of £3m mentioned for the former Real Mallorca star.
Gutierrez’s compatriot, Luciano Becchio, continues to be touted with a City exit. The Sun on Sunday claim the striker could be ready to make a return to his former club Leeds with Brian McDermott in the market for fresh firepower to push Leeds into promotion contention in the Championship. Leeds were hammered 6-0 at Sheffield Wednesday over the weekend, but Becchio was a prolific striker during his time at Elland Road before his swap deal with Steve Morison 12 months ago. The striker’s first team opportunities under Hughton have been limited, which prompted him to go public recently with his frustrations over a lack of game-time at Carrow Road.
Wes Hoolahan’s future dominated the build up to Norwich’s 2-0 Premier League defeat at Everton on Saturday with the Irishman linked to Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa. Now the Sunday Mirror claim Lambert is also interested in another former player he worked with at City with one-time Tottenham loanee Kyle Naughton tipped to make a £3m switch to the Midlands.
