Norwich City have confirmed that striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel is in the squad for tonight’s pre-season friendly at Braintree Town.

The £8m Dutch striker has been linked with moves away from City this summer following his disastrous debut season, scoring just once, but Canaries fans could see the 25-year-old in action in Essex tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

The former Sporting Lisbon man is joined by Wes Hoolahan, Anthony Pilkington, Martin Olsson and Mark Bunn in the squad for the match – all of whom were not in the squad for Saturday’s 1-0 win at Dereham Town.

Midfielders Hoolahan and Pilkington started their summer breaks late due to international duty with the Republic of Ireland, Olsson has been receiving treatment for a should injury and Declan Rudd was preferred to Bunn as back-up goalkeeper at Dereham.

Rudd, Jacob Murphy and Luciano Becchio drop out of the squad and could be in consideration for a City select XI which is also playing tonight at King’s Lynn Town.

Former captain Sebastien Bassong is due to play in that match against the Linnets, which is also a 7.45pm kick-off.

Norwich City squad for Braintree: John Ruddy (GK), Steven Whittaker, Bradley Johnson, Russell Martin (C), Michael Turner, Lewis Grabban, Jonny Howson, Kyle Lafferty, Gary Hooper, Anthony Pilkington, Mark Bunn (GK), Wes Hoolahan, Jamar Loza, Elliott Bennett, Javier Garrido, Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Josh Murphy, Nathan Redmond, Martin Olsson, Ryan Bennett, Alexander Tettey, Andrew Surman, Adel Gafaiti.

  • Possibly not the best, most macho picture of RVW they could find. However, good for him that's he's scored now.

  • I am with Marco here, i think RVW will be one of our stars this year. He has talent and will score 20+ goals given a more adventurous style of football this year.

  • I will hang my hat out here !! I really want this lad to stay this season and do what he was bought to do ... score loads of goals . ! Something tells me he`s gonna be a different kettle of fish this season with the riddance of that disease infested coaching staff we had here.

  • Probably RVW's best chance to score this season. Lets hope he gets about twenty chances.... so he can score at least one goal!

  • Best thing for Bassong would be to pull his finger out and start playing his way back into some sort of form !

  • Lets hope our 23 mis-firing former Premiership stars don't get turned over by a completely unheard of Braintree outfit tonight.

  • I wonder if Bassong will recover from his dented pride injury. He's not wanted at Carrow Road and he's going to need a good agent to find him another club.

  • Matt - poor old Becchio has barely played a league game for two years. I can't believe he hasn't requested a transfer. Or perhaps he goes into his local bank of a Thursday morning and asks for thirty thousand pounds in cash. He can then sit in his garden and count it and breath in the satisfaction. Just a thought.

  • You're just an old softy Matt, Becci and Seb owe you a pint or two. City could do with a man like you, you'd have plenty of work before the season starts but hopefully not too much once we get underway.

  • I would hope any potential first team player not in the Braintree squad would be in this Select XI at this stage to maximise playing time. These articles sound like NCFC is lacking any common sense management.

  • Ah not quite Mr Bean-esq but close to it. Just wasnt his best day in a NCFC shirt (out of the 5 days hes had). Feel sorry for Becchio. I do however get the feeling he will end up at a Boro, Leeds, type on loan this season and likely do quite well at Championship level.

  • Good to see Freezer has knocked £500k off Ricky`s price tag. By the time he leaves on a Free, the hackophants will have created the impression of a `good bit of business`. You just cannot beat a good bit of revisionism. To order. I`m sure there must be some madness in the method.

  • your description of becchio's hi-jinx made me laugh - you made him sound like a Mr Bean sketch. Was he really that bad?! I was kind of hoping he'd be a keeper for the Champ. All this speculation is doing my head in

  • I spoke to soon ha! Guess they decided to release the squad for todays game early after all. cue pandemonium! I notice Pilks and others are there too archie! No Becchio. This likely wont be a surprise to anyone who saw the Dereham game. Poor old Becchio had a woeful game. couldnt hold it up, couldn't find a NCFC player and even fell over at one point! I've been all for him getting more chances last season but i'd highly suspect a distinct lack of game time at any level hasn't help Becchio. A real reserve league last season would've help becchio no end! Instead of 1 x 60min run out for an u21 side every 5 months.
