Prime minister David Cameron is backing Norwich City to win at Sunderland tomorrow - after admitting he is a fan of the Canaries’ joint majority shareholder Delia Smith.

Mr Cameron had been asked to go up against Football Focus pundit Mark Lawrenson in the BBC One programme’s weekly football predictions competition.

The prime minister was speaking from Camp Bastion, in Afghanistan, to launch a new football partnership to develop the league system in the war-torn country.

He predicted the Canaries will win 2-0 at the Stadium of Light, but admitted his method of predicting the results was rather unorthodox.

Mr Cameron said Delia’s cookery books were “brilliant” before saying: “I quite like Norwich, bit of a Delia Smith fan, so let’s give this one to Norwich.”

He also backed West Ham to win 2-1 at Manchester United, because of his friendship with Hammers director Karen Brady, who recently accompanied him on a major business trip to China.

The Scunthorpe family connections of his wife, Samantha, also saw the PM back Hull to win 1-0 at West Brom.

Mr Cameron, an Aston Villa fan who backed his side to win 2-0 at Stoke, said of his prediction method being based around women: “If you don’t know much about football you’ve got to go with something haven’t you?”

Football Focus will be broadcast at midday tomorrow.

The PM’s predictions in full:

Liverpool 2 Cardiff City 0

Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle United 2

Fulham 0 Manchester City 3

Manchester United 1 West Ham 2

Stoke City 0 Aston Villa 2

Sunderland 0 Norwich City 2

West Brom 0 Hull City 1

Southampton 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1

Swansea City 3 Everton 0

Arsenal 1 Chelsea 2

  • Expect a U turn at half time in the prediction when Norwich are losing 2-0 and Cameron still trying to back a winning horse.

  • I am afraid the Curse of Cameron could be in play here and that,as a result, I fear City are now doomed against Sunderland. If they do lose,it will be all his fault.

  • Our Dave, the mouth of the House, has got as much experience of football as he has of politics, very little. His predictions, i.e. Man U 1- West ham 2 just about proofs it. What an awful frippery.

  • You should all be ashamed of yourselves, each and every one of you. The Prime Minister, no less, walks all the way to Wells next the sea, via Walsingham where he drops by to pay his respects. Not only does he pose for the best photographic opportunity that we have ever seen, whilst carefully checking out that his yacht was successfully rescued from the ravages of the north Norfolk sea. On top of this, he crawls on his hands and knees to Sandringham to see if there are any crumbs that might have found their way to the carpet from one of her Majesty’s discarded mince pies. Such humbility is truly admiral. So admiral, that he simply had to pop in to nearby Burnham Thorpe to pay further respect to another national hero. As if that wasn’t enough, he is not too busy, at this frightfully frantic time of year, to cast his aspersions in the direction of the nation’s unguarded nets, thereby distilling such pearls of wisdom as a fair and completely inaccurate prediction of the weekend’s fixture list. It is therefore unfortunate, that in similar fashion to his half baked policies, he only gets the predicted scoreline half right. All Norwich supporters, while agreeing overall that there will be a win, have logically concluded that the result will infact be 0-4,thereby ensuring a landslide victory if not an overall Tory majority. Regrettably then, we are forced to conclude that this whole charade is just another publicity stunt and an attempt to make Ed Balls look ridiculous, as if further effort was actually needed. I remain sir, your insipid servant, a shrivelled retch of such stain, and indeed distain who humbly requests that you give Norwich the very wide berth that it undoubtedly deserves from your scenic tour of our principality. By Jove sir, I drink to you and the silky smoothness of your entourage.
