Was Gary Hooper’s goal against Swansea the best ever by a Canaries player at Carrow Road? David Freezer takes a look at the contenders.
Gary Hooper’s spectacular 30-yard equaliser against Swansea prompted wild celebrations on Sunday, but is it the best ever goal scored by a Norwich City player at Carrow Road?
There have been plenty of contenders over the years but Hooper’s chested control and looping volley is being hailed as the best seen at Carrow Road in a long time.
The former Celtic man faces some serious competition for the overall title though.
Darren Huckerby and Youssef Safri have both laid claim with brilliant goals since the turn of the millennium, but Justin Fashanu and Robert Rosario also scored goal of the season contenders in the 1980s.
Here is a reminder of those five outstanding Carrow Road goals.

February 9, 1980 - Justin Fashanu v Liverpool
One of the most famous goals to ever be scored by a Norwich City player came in a 5-3 defeat to reigning Division One champions Liverpool.
Fashanu controlled the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the area, flicked the ball up to his right to lose the defender marking him and then unleashed a left-footed volley which rocketed into the far bottom corner.
The spectacular effort earned was named Match of the Day’s goal of the season for the 1979-80 season.
September 9, 1989 - Robert Rosario v Southampton
One of the other classic Carrow Road goals also came in a high-scoring clash, a 4-4 draw with Southampton in Division One, in which Rosario scored twice.
In fact it was the tall striker’s towering header which Robert Fleck turned home to bring the score back to 4-3 and then Rosario on target again to earn City the 4-4 draw, ending a one-year drought for Rosario at Carrow Road.
It was his first which was the headline grabber though, smashing home a knock-down from Fleck from 25 yards, with his left-footed volley arrowing into the far top corner.
April 20, 2005 - Youssef Safri v Newcastle
Morrocan central midfielder Safri only scored four goals for City during his three years at Carrow Road, but his 40-yard effort against Newcastle was a real piledriver.
When Thomas Helveg laid the ball to Safri to the right of the centre-circle, few could have expected what was about to happen.
Safri took one touch to roll the ball in front of him and then unleashed a rocket which flew past despairing Newcastle keeper Shay Given into the top right-hand corner to put City 1-0 up in a match which the Canaries won 2-1, thanks to an injury-time header from Dean Ashton.
March 13, 2007 - Darren Huckerby v Birmingham City
He scored 48 goals for the Canaries but Huckerby’s solo effort against Birmingham sums up how much of a talisman the winger was during his five seasons.
His meandering run past four Birmingham players, typically cutting inside from his left-wing position before thumping the ball into the bottom right-hand corner from the edge of the penalty area, was classic Huckerby.
It was the decisive goal in a 1-0 win against Birmingham in the Championship.
