First impressions count for Neil Adams as he puts his Norwich City players through their pre-season paces.

The majority of the Canaries’ first team squad underwent personal fitness tests last week prior to a full-scale return to Colney over the last few days, as Adams and his coaching team look to put in the groundwork ahead of the Championship opener at Wolves on August 10.

Norwich will now step up their preparations with a four-day trip to the FA’s national football centre at St George’s Park, and the City boss is delighted by the early signs.

“They look excellent,” he said. “They were in for testing individually on Thursday and Friday. We put them through a two-hour time slot and worked them on the treadmill and various other exercises.

“Speaking to the sports scientists they are delighted and tell me they are better at this stage than last year in terms of fitness levels as a group which is very pleasing to hear. We’ve done one tough double session on Monday as well and they looked sharp so I am pleased.”

Adams hopes to make a goalkeeping addition to his backroom set-up for the trip to Burton after England coach Dave Watson completed his move to Premier League Southampton.

“Dave was an excellent coach and the fact he was with England at the World Cup tells you how highly he is regarded,” said Adams. “He has managed to go to a Premier League club and we wish him all the best. Again, it is one of those you can’t really stand in his way with the level he has been working at in Brazil. We now have to get some cover in quickly. We should have some in by over the next day or so Whether that is permanent or temporary it needs looking at straight away. That is the priority for now.

“I’m really pleased with the team we have put together. We have Gary (Holt) and Mark (Robson) to do the coaching and it is great Gary has come back in after his time at Falkirk. Joe Royle is someone I have huge respect for, as everyone knows. He has almost an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game. You can see why I have brought him in as a consultant to help me in every way he can.”

Watson has linked up with former Canaries’ first team coach Martin Huner and ex-Liverpool assistant manager Sammy Lee on the south coast as part of new Saints’ boss Ronald Koeman’s coaching staff.

“Despite his relatively young age, Dave has already built up an impressive CV and is regarded as one of the most talented goalkeeping coaches in Europe,” said Southampton’s executive director Les Reed. “The fact we have been able to attract Sammy and Dave to Southampton is testament to our ambition to continue growing as a club, and shows our commitment to develop talented footballers at all age levels.”

  • Totally agree with how Big Dunc would have reacted to training in pink boots, ankle socks and a bra. Surely, these guys are hurting as we are. Aren't they? Some will be (Russ definitlely...nope, can't think of many more) but even now as the annual optimism wells up I'm taken back to November 1987 at the end of HRH Ken Brown's reign and the club retreated internally with HRH Dave Stringer and Dave Williams, similar to grabbing the boy Neil from Canary Call. What followed was 5 years of the most brilliant attractive football in the top half of Division 1, before Mike Walker took over in '92... the rest is history. So, maybe, just maybe... we live to dream.

  • Salmon pink boots, little white pop socks, and man bras. If the weather was a few degrees cooler, they'd doubtless be wearing those knee-length, skin-tight yellow lycra man panties which you sometimes see on match days protruding from their shorts. Welcome to the catwalk of sporting fashion. I presume that by wearing this ridiculous array of unnecessary accessories, the players are paid lots of money to supplement their meagre incomes by the manufacturers who dreamed it up. But I'm not a "sports scientist", so what do I know? I DO know that Norman Hunter, Chopper Harris and Duncan Forbes would not be seen dead on a training ground dressed like this.

  • Gruff I think the "Truths", having been unfolded in the period December 2012 to May 2013, were completely out in the open by the end of September. Pity those who should have been afraid decided on the course of "Hope for the best and do nothing". Positives? Nope, can't see one. Let's hope this season is better.

  • Saying they are fitter than last season doesn't carry much weight ( no pun intended). Just hope they are stronger + faster as the Chump is in many ways a more physical division. Hope Sgt. Major Holt rips into them. PS: Why so coy Barking? I've heard you + your "soap-on-a-rope" were very popular in the showers back in the day.......

  • Looked through the training pics. A few faces still missing - or, at least I did not spot them...... Fer is still winning the World Cup, Tettey, Wes, Olsson (where is he), Rudd, Johnson, Lafferty, Pilks, Bunn. Did I miss or not spot anyone ?

  • I feel sorry for RvW, really I do. Despite his comparative affluence, good looks, top-notch tonsure and a secure contract, his experiences of last season must have been debilitating. Poor chap. I really hope he can put that all behind him now. Perhaps going out of England on loan would be better for him? Not Portugal or The Netherlands but, say, Denmark. He could team up with Elmander at Brondby. Stew - you are an exhumist extraordinaire. Why can`t you let sleeping dogs.... sleep? Back on subject now. No slacking. The Boss is back. I just knew he was going nowhere.

  • If we could remain on subject... Conditioning is key to this season. More games than last season so if the players can maintain a good conditioning we stand an excellent chance of gaining promotion by playing on our opponents fatigue as the season draws on. While unusual that RVW and GH are the only two players without the GPS trackers I wouldn't look too far in it. If they were definitely off they simply wouldn't be training with the first team. Andrew Surman has a tracker on and I wouldn't say he is a dead cert to stay. Pilks and Wes seem to be missing but this may be down to their international involvement.

  • That IS Winkel! And Becchio who looks a bit like Napoleon Dynamite with the sweet 'fro. One thing that's always puzzled me is why Hooper always always always wears arm warmers. In everything. It's a summers day Gary. You're making me feel dehydrated looking at you!
