“Our fans are the envy of world football” - Norwich City chief executive David McNally’s rallying call to supporters

Norwich City chief executive David McNally said: “We’re delighted that the Eastern Daily Press and the Evening News and our main club sponsors Aviva have launched the Yell Army campaign.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

“Our fans are the envy of world football – they fill Carrow Road for every game and follow us around the country in their thousands. Their backing this season and every season has been fantastic and we really need the Yellow Army to get behind the team as loudly and proudly as possible again for these crucial remaining games.

Why it’s time for the #YellArmy to get behind Norwich City

“It’s been a long and challenging season competing in the toughest domestic league in the world and the fans raising the roof at Carrow Road in the matches ahead will give the players a real boost in the final run-in to the Barclays Premier League campaign.

“A big thank you to Archant and Aviva for their great support and to all the Norwich City and Community Sports Foundation staff who have volunteered to place 26,000 clap banners around the stadium in readiness for Saturday’s game against Sunderland.

“So please support the campaign and get right behind the team.”

  • More evidence that something is deeply wrong at Carrow Road. No word from McNally for weeks and weeks and then he pitches up with a demand to turn up , spend more money and support the barely supportable! No acknowledgement of the dire performances. It is almost refreshing that he does not even try to conceal the contempt he holds for the fans. If he REALLY believed that we are the "best supporters in the world" he would listen to us and get rid of Hughton and his followers and perhaps give us some entertainment , which is what we pay him to provide! If the Manager and the Chief Executive are this deep in denial they should BOTH go! As previous posters here have said, we have been standingsitting on the terraces since before he was conceived and we will be here long after he has gone. Our investment in the Club is long term, he will be off to the next highest bidder as soon as he can. While he is here the minimum he can do is provide a product that we CAN get behind, not this pale immitation of a Premier side!

It's all a bit ate for happy clapping. here's my prediction of how the season will end: 15 West Ham 35; 16 Palace 34; 17 Sunderland 33 (-35); 18 Norwich 33 (-41); 19 Fulham 30 (-42) 20 Cardiff (-41). I really hope the outcome is different, but I really can't see where the points are going to come from.

  • Lincs - I get your point too - but in terms of doing *everything* that could possibly make a difference to the result on saturday - the fans making a bit more noise and ramping up the atmosphere, even if the team if playing poorly - is something that can help, and McNally knows that - and he probably also knows that to give the club the best possible chance, he *has* to ask the fans to do this, despite the anger it will cause. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't, so may as well do!

And why does every single bit of press relating to city have to immediately become a stick to beat McNally or Hughton with? Yeah we all want Hughton out - me included - but it's not happening before the end of the season so let's just give the school girl b*tching a break shall we?

  • Littleyellowbirdie - I think you've got that the wrong way round. It's because the players haven't been bothered all season that the fans find it difficult to pick up the atmosphere. And rumour has it that McNally will be leaving us for a job at the FA and, if true, might explain his apparent lack of interest in the team this season. Either way, I do resent his patronising comments in this article.

  • All said and done this is a non-story really and diverts attention away from the main issues: our performances (or lack of them) on the pitch. Under Hughton we haven;t gone forward in any sense of the word. Quite the opposite. Our standard of play, conspicuous lack of goals resulting in our precarious league position, comes against a backdrop of a massive summer spend. Major stores who spent heavily and got their marketing wrong have reacted by sacking their bosses. At Norwich City accountability appears to be lacking. Yet we are a £80m a year business. At this level football clubs need to be run under similar commercial models as other businesses. We can argue that football is different as it is a sport. But in essence it isn't because at this level it is all about money and results. As we are constantly reminded by those who run football clubs it is a "results business." Food for thought?

Plus there will be 26,0000 items of detritus to dispose of, once they`ve done the job of dumbing the dumberers and accelerating the onset of hearing damage. I expect Archant will be supplying the recycle bins. There might be some useful copy available. On the Sickter Scale of Condescension, that went off-scale. There should have been a massive shake up before Christmas. Do the owners and board of N City actually belive in the club? It seems as though their agenda is to take the money and run back into the Chmpionship league. The fans have been stabbed in the back.

As for being supporters the envy of the world? Has McNally ever watched European football? • No need for the high esteem, Manc, but thanks anyway. You are right, of course. No CEO dances to the tune of the fans, nor should he. What I mean is this: fans usually speak from their hearts, not their brains and as a result, the manager and the CEO get it in the neck when the team doesn't do well. But this is different. A large number of the posters on here have supported Norwich since before McNally was born. An even larger number actually know about football. They may not have managed PL clubs, but they've played, coached or managed at a serious level. (I don't put myself in either category). Of course it's pointless sacking Hughton now, but he should have sacked him after Luton or Man City away. I can only think of one regular poster who thinks otherwise. Yes, it would have cost the club to sack him, but it's going to cost a hell of a lot more in lost revenue when we get relegated. Players, managers, kit design, sponsors etc etc, they all change. Fans are constant, often knowledgeable and when they speak in one voice, they deserve to be listened too.
