Norwich and Swardeston will meet in the Norfolk Twenty20 Cup final for the second year in a row after both won their semi-finals this week.

Reigning champions Swardeston raced to a 10-wicket victory against Great Witchingham and Norwich edged a much tighter match against Vauxhall Mallards, with both matches played at Horsford CC’s Manor Park.

Norwich batted first in their semi-final on Tuesday evening and scored a very competitive 174-3 in their full 20 overs.

They survived the early loss of Chris Borrett with the score on eight and then Oli Higenbottom and Russell Emmanuel added 48 runs before Higenbottom was bowled by Dylan Blignaut.

Emmanuel and Dominic Matterazzo then added 64 runs before Matterazzo was caught and bowled by Adam Todd for 42. Emmanuel finished with an unbeaten 86, including four sixes.

Paul Bradshaw and Geeth Alwis bowled economically but Adam Todd was the most successful wicket taker with 2-45 off his four overs.

Mallards started their innings confidently and by 10 overs were ahead of the required run rate thanks to the efforts of David Turner (52) and Dylan Blignaut (29).

But with the loss of wickets on 116, 118 and 136, the innings fell away due to tight bowling, although the result was in doubt until the penultimate ball.

The innings closed on 168-5, with Oli Sutton taking 2-27 off his full four overs.

Then on Wednesday night Witchingham won the toss and decided to bat but were always struggling and reached 40-4 off the first 10 overs against Swardeston.

Things did not improve and they were bowled out for 67 after 18.4 overs. Jonathan Spelman made 20 and the most successful Swardeston wicket taker was Dale Reynolds, who removed most of the middle order and lower middle order batsmen to take 4-7 off three overs.

Swardeston were in a hurry and scored the required runs off 5.4 overs – finishing on 68-0. Peter Lambert scored 28 and Stephen Gray 26.

Swardeston and Norwich will return to Manor Park for the final on Friday, August 1, starting at 6pm.
