A mid-table clash in Premier A of the Norwich and District Table Tennis League saw Wensum C take three points off UEA A with a 6-4 win. CEYMS B beat third-placed Gothic A 7-3. CEYMS A clinched all four points in their 8-2 victory against Briston.
It’s now a two-horse race at the top of Premier B, with Foxwood C and Harriers A pulling away. Foxwood C were taken to the wire at the hands of Electricity. Zoltan Barabas suffered his first defeat this season at the hands of Jamie MacIntosh. A win from Keith Meader against Andrew Leeds, plus the doubles with Jamie and Dave Fordham closed the match 6-4 to Foxwood C - just enough to keep them at number one. Foxwood D picked up a point from their 7-3 defeat against Harriers B with Phil Clarke unable to win any singles. Despite the 9-1 loss, St Faiths were competitive against Harriers A.
In Division One, Returners A needed a win or draw against Foxwood F to guarantee promotion to Premier B.With an unfortunate late injury to Kieran Brady, F were already 3-0 down before the start. In the opening game Stuart Purling continued his winning streak by beating Stuart Cooper. Aaron Hacon secured Premier B status by winning a tight game against the unlucky Ian Layt. Stephen Johnson continued his impressive form with a very strong maximum. Stuart Cooper picked up Foxwood’s only game of the night as Returners came away 9-1 winners. Bottom-of-the-table Rosebery Road lost 9-1 to Foxwood E despite some tight sets.
The team leading the table in Division Two, Missionaries, met Dynamic Rams, third, and were beaten 6-4 thanks to well deserved singles win by Richard Rump over Andy Watson. Foxwood H fought out a predictable draw with old rivals Ex Choristers to surely make their survival certain. CEYMS F thrashed bottom club Wensum H 10-0 but were forced to field an injured Norman Laws to secure the points. Taverham C forced a fine four- pointer beating Fourbees B 8-2, making Fourbees’ task to get away from the drop zone a little bit harder.
Division Three’s bottom club Blazing Paddles won their first match of the season. Taverham F were no match for Blazing Paddles on their home turf and lost 9-1. A strong Fairfield side beat Taverham D 6-4 after a long match.
