Sporting Kansas City's Dom Dwyer is aiming to fire his way to a spell in England next year after missing out on a loan move to Charlton Athletic.
The striker will return to America on Friday after failing to bag a winter spell with the Championship club during Major League Soccer's close season. But the 23-year-old is now more determined than ever to score a hatful of goals in the 2014 MLS campaign in order to finally play professionally in his home country.
Dwyer said: 'I ran out of time really and Charlton's new ownership wouldn't approve anything even though the manager (Chris Powell) wanted to do the deal. But that happens in football.
'I'm disappointed but I knew for a while it may not happen.
'Half of January is gone so a loan is less worthwhile and my club in the US wouldn't let me go on loan for the half season, only short-term. I really enjoyed my time at Charlton and can't speak highly enough about Chris Powell and the other staff. I loved the boys and training was great and kept me sharp heading into KC's pre-season. I'll keep in contact with the people at Charlton and also other clubs and we will see next winter. If I have a big season in the MLS, who knows?'
The King's Lynn-raised frontman won the MLS Cup with Sporting KC in December following a hugely successful loan spell at third tier Orlando City where he bagged a league-record 15 goals in 13 matches.
The one-time Norwich City Academy player was training with Charlton but his plans remained on hold while the Addicks have been the subject of a £20m takeover bid by Belgian businessman Roland Duchatelet.
The 67-year-old's company Staprix NV acquired 100pc of the Championship outfit's shares last week after the final legal formalities were completed, giving the green light for a new era at The Valley.
Dwyer had hoped to be part of that new era but that dream is now over.
