Opinion: Wes Hoolahan must not be sold – case closed

Wes Hoolahan Wes Hoolahan

January is said to be a notoriously difficult transfer window in which to deal, but you’d hope that the rumoured Aston Villa approach for Wes Hoolahan would have been the easiest one of all to deal with.

No. Go away. Don’t come back.

Choose any one of the three, it doesn’t matter which. The message should have been loud and clear.

Wes Hoolahan must not be sold.

I have no gripe with Villa’s reported offer of £750,000. Yes, it’s not enough and yes, you could perhaps believe it to be derisory. But if you are Villa, what would your opening bid be for a 31-year-old player who can’t get into a team that is struggling to shake off the worries of being relegated? And don’t forget, the assumption might well be that if Hoolahan isn’t starting games then the manager doesn’t much fancy him.

To look at it from a Norwich perspective you perhaps have to be one of those who admires Hoolahan greatly and believe he should start every game, come rain or shine, in form, or not. And to that end, Hoolahan is priceless.

In a team which is crying out for something a bit different, off the cuff, unpredictable, entertaining, dangerous, sneaky, devious and daring, then Hoolahan is surely, for crying out loud, your man.

This has nothing to do with his longevity at Carrow Road, it is about his ability. Age doesn’t look like it wearies Hoolahan; he’s a nimble creature, agile, twisty-turny. He could get through a locked door without the aid of a key.

And Paul Lambert knows it.

The message to him should be the one to any prospective buyer. Go away and don’t come back.

  • Stew you stupid s0d. Its the opinion of most who have ever had the pleasure of watching our beloved football team. Let Lambchops play his childish games - even Villa fans can all see through the smoke screen!

  • Although I will give Mr Hughton some credit... He's slightly ahead of Mr Rodent... he want's to play players he bought and any he did not will stew on the bench regardless of how good they are or could be, it's a massive gamble, "He who Walked" it paid off, because we were in Div3 not in the prem, that's why he walked, this guy is trying to do it in the Prem, he's walking a tigthrope, anyone can see Wes is unhappy, he should be sitting on the bench... Mr He who Knows Best would love it if Wes put in request, then it would take the heat off him, for getting rid of one of the most popular players a City, if I was Wes I'd sit tight wait for the "heave ho", then He Who Knows Best will be shown up for what he is Two rungs up the ladder higher than Rodent

  • Aim this at the current manager?.....ask the current manager if he is an integral part of the first team? I dare say we all know the answer to that one!. does not run around enough to fit into the current managers tactic. He deserves to play preferably with NCFC but if the current manager doesn't play him??????????

  • I couldn't agree more, but if he isn't going to get a game or even be given much of a walk on part, we might as well put a three quarters of a mill bag of swag on the bench behind a cardboard cut out, save salary every week and make some income. Terrible waste of talent though. But we can't just keep buying players without selling to balance the books. Even not playing them a la Fox, Becchio, Hooli etc is bad enough pounds per week wise?

  • I could not agree more. We revived as a team last season when Wes came in to play behind Holt. Against Man Utd he had a good game as did Redmond, Keep him and play him.

  • It also requires Hughton to tell Wes he wants him.

  • McNally has come out and said what most literate fans knew already. No player has handed in a transfer request and no player will be sold against the clubs wishes. In other words...No, Paul, you can't have him.

  • Hear, hear! Wes must not be sold - case closed. And as Brian says; In the ManU match Wes was fantastic. I wish CH could field him even more, and also give him more options for his creativity, with two strikers in front of him. But of course, some kind of rotation everyone in the team must accept.

  • The season for NCFC is likely to hinge on whether Hooper and Van Wolfswinkel get enough goals between them.Hoolahan is a vital part of the creativity needed to provide a supply line for them.He deserves a run alongside either of the 2 strikers or even, heaven forbid,in behind both of them.OTBC.

  • If we hold on to Wes, CH must play him! His , energy, enthusiasm, vision, skill, flexibility and trickery should make him a first choice. He may not have the physical presence and he will at times loose possession and play stray passes, but he is an attacking, creative, fast thinking midfielder and NCFC need those qualities more now than at any other time.

  • Well said Chris, Wes is the only natural we have in midfield, apart from the emerging Redmond. The amount of money is a joke.

  • This article was well timed. David Mcnally has just confirmed no transfer request has been made and Wes will not be sold. I do wonder if this is all some diversionary tactic for the Jed Steer tribunal next week. Maybe villa haven't got the cash to pay for Steer? They are looking more and more every day like a tinpot club "Lambert Out!"

  • Only 9% say yes. Thats about as one sided as any Poll ive ever seen! Hope Hughton has a browse of the EDP website for this. Though if his attitude towards the internet is anything like his tactics he likely doesn't use the internet incase his laptop catches a virus ;)
