Norwich City defender Daniel Ayala is reported to be close to joining Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan.
Forest are said to be in negotiations with the Canaries with a view to the 21-year-old Spanish centre-half becoming manager Sean O’Driscoll’s fourth new defender of the close season.
Ayala, who joined the Canaries from Liverpool for a reported £800,000 fee last summer, made 10 first team appearances last season but was sidelined for long spells by knee and hamstring injuries.
He has previous experience in the Championship, from loan spells with both Hull City and Derby County.
Ayala’s latest outing for City was as a late substitute for Elliott Ward in Tuesday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Ajax at Carrow Road.

Or perhaps a crisp pre-dator, lurking stealthily through the supermarkets waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting bag of salt and vinegar that wanders too close.... That must be the restaurant with the complaining critic and angry chef then, Swiss!

I see that the invention of the potato chip or crisp is precisely stated as being on August 24 1853 in Saratoga Springs, NY, probably around lunchtime. Interesting these were "ready salted", the blue bag coming later as a result of a failure to scale up the process.

He is pretty old, but, does he pre-date crisps?

Then there`s "game chips". Basically just home made crisps for the accompaniment of game. Another Scottish connection there? Mustn`t grouse. Was that food critic Michael Winner? He always charms restaurant staff.

Apparently "crisps" were invented when a food critic ate at a restaurant and after commenting on the french fries being too soggy, undercooked and not seasoned the enraged chef sent him a plate of over cooked, deep fried potato covered in salt. True story.

I suppose USA-style chips are just crisps, really? Chips are then "fries". It`s the word "fries" that attracts Caledonian chappies like Calderwood & Berra. I wonder if our (ex) Zak had shares in the eponymous Burger `n Fries "Restaurants"?

If Cristophe Berra is on the cards, then my original theory that we should have made a job lot offer for the Scotland squad is getting closer, however another CB, hmmm. Hopefully CH is reviewing the options and will lay his egg next week. It isn't easy.

PS. aeleven is right. Confirm Holty as Captain now and let him inspire his team-mates like he always has! Nobody does it better...... There are too many loose ends for the more worrying sort of Canary fan. Whither Vaughan? Full backs? Captaincy? Dani A. OTBC

Penfold, that reliable Redtop, the Sun, reckons that Berra is a "target" for Soton, Stoke & Leicester. £3 million. Is Frankie & Bennie`s one of those US style eateries? Those two Scots health food freaks would have enjoyed a good cholesterol-fest! Did you really see Berra in there or are you `avin` a giraaaffe? I`d never heard of Berra! What`s happening with "Pitbull" Vaughan? FULL BACKS!!

MarkB and Prof - Whitbread's wage demands were too high and I feel it would be a shrewd move to let Ayala go to Forest for a season long loan, as long as we have a 'recall clause' in case of injuries.

Remember that you can only have 25 players older than 21 registered to play in the PL. Ayala is older than 21 - so seeing as I understand (on reasonable authority) that we are close to signing curtis Davies, I think this would be a sensible move. We've got a big squad now (numbers-wise) - but we still need FB cover. So this would free some space, get him some good experience and come back next season to fight for his place. Turner and Davies, in my opinion, have the makings of a very good PL CB partnership.

This is bonkers, he's one of our best defenders. I'm sorry but I'm starting to worry, the other night we looked like a bunch of headless chickens against Ajax. Grant and Vaughan looked pretty good working together, but apart from them there was hardly any movement on the pitch as we stuck to two rigid lines of four which were so close to each other that the chap behind me thought we were playing a flat back eight! At the end of last season we looked exciting and fluent, the other night we looked stodgy and dull. Come on Chris, don't let one of our best defenders go, instil some confidence in the team by making Grant captain and for goodness sake put the excitement back into our play.

Didn't see enough of Ayala last season, due to injury, but he was a damned site better than Elliott Ward. Goodness knows how Ward has retained his place! MLS

This doesn't make sense to me. I thought we were in need of quality defenders. The only reason he didn't get much game time last season is because of injury. If he does go out on loan then I hope there is a recall clause attached to the deal. We may need him during the course of the season.
