Russell Martin admitted the “real” Norwich City went missing on Saturday as a purring Liverpool handed them their second Premier League hiding of the season.

Uruguayan star Luis Suarez showed his liking to Carrow Road once again to match the hat-trick he scored at City last season, while first goals of the campaign for Steve Morison and substitute Grant Holt were little more than consolations.

“The real Norwich is what you’ve seen in the last three or four weeks, not here and not on the first day (at Fulham), that’s for sure – we have shown that in the last three years,” said Martin.

“We could’ve had nine or 10 points in the last four games. We haven’t, but we know what we’ve got in that dressing room and we know that the work ethic and the ethos in that dressing room that’s got us to where we are now remains the same.

“The management staff have come in and been great, and we were on the end of a few hidings last year.

“That is going to happen in this league, but that should be us out of the way now – because we can’t afford to be like that again.

“The performances have been there and that’s what is disappointing.

“I didn’t see it coming. None of us did, because we’ve deserved a lot more in the last few weeks and today we got what we deserved, which was nothing.

“But it comes from the start – as soon as you start like that, you’re chasing the game. We’ve been in every single game the last four or five weeks and that’s what is frustrating about today. That wasn’t us at all.”

Martin admitted City will have to wipe their hiding from their minds quickly – but still has full faith the Canaries will retain their Premier League status come the end of the season.

“I think as professional football players you have to wipe these things from your mind,” said Martin. “It’s done. I’m sure we will have a video nasty about it on Monday and talk about what went wrong, but it’s like with the good games – you never get too hung up on the good games and you’ve got to treat the bad games exactly the same as those.

“We drew 3-3 at Arsenal last year, and the next day it’s gone. So we’ll have a meeting about it, Tuesday will be a work day and then crack on looking forward to the next game.”

Much like the fixture last season, Luis Suarez was the difference – a second hat-trick in successive visits proving the point.

“He’s one of the world’s best players – all the other stuff that comes with him, if you ignore all that then he’s a superb player and he proved that today,” said Martin.

“People say about taking chances and sometimes he doesn’t score as many as he should, but today we seemed to be on the end of one of his good days.

“And that’s the frustrating thing. You can’t afford to give players like Steven Gerrard and Suarez time to put it in the back of the net.

“We’ve gifted them two goals and then it becomes a battle to try and get back into the game – and you’ve seen the final score and that’s what becomes of it.

“We are deflated really. None of us saw that coming.”

Things won’t get any easier for City over the coming weeks either, as they continue to look for their opening top-flight victory of the season.

But Martin is confident no one in a yellow shirt will go hiding.

“You shouldn’t have to get yourself up for any of these games – you go to these places and they come here and you should be up for all of it,” added the City full-back.

“We knew how tough it was going to be this year. You lose that surprise element a little bit.

“But what you’ve got in there is a group of lads and a management team who will all work together and have done for the last three years.

“Obviously a new manager has come in but the ethos and the work ethic of the group hasn’t changed at all. That is what will pull us through and I’m 100pc confident we will be fine. You don’t become a bad team overnight – it’s as simple as that, despite what people say. We know what we’ve got in that dressing room, and we’re sure it will be enough.”

  • Last season CR was like a cauldron. This season its been as quiet as a public library after closing time. I just wish larger sections of City supporters would get behind the boys rather than sitting looking glum faced with their arms crossed. Spending the entire afternoon listening to Liverpool fans singing their heads off was beginning to get on my t1ts!

  • Respect Russ - you and Jacko seem to be the only current first choices who still remember where you came from and where you'd like to stay. Try and help the rest of them, 'cos it's blatantly obvious Hughton hasn't got a Scooby.

  • Michael Ellis, not sure I fully understand the relevance of your trip back from Bulgaria, apart from revealing that you weren't within 1000 miles of Carrow Road when your incisive views were formed. As a point of interest, if travelling back from Bulgaria impairs your ability to spell properly, which faculties would be impacted by a trip to the Czech Republic or Moldova?

  • 'Shae off' - maybe; learn from, definitely. But watching Sky highlights we had chances. The score could have been 5-7 - we have to play Holt and Morison together.. And we may need Russell Martin in central defence when Bassong not playing.

  • Unforunately City didn't get started Saturday. When plan A is to keep it tight and the opposition scores after 1 minute you need a Plan B, which we didn't have. We need to win the games we play well in and not drop points. i.e. QPR at home etc. Don't think we will get much in the next two games but lets not panic. Got to give it til Xmas before making any rash decisions.

  • Russ has to go centreback as cover like last year. We have to have Holt and Morison up front to give ourselves a chance of getting the goals we need. Our problem then is who covers Russ's full back role?

  • I cannot get my head round the 'bright side' nonsense I'm reading, at fulham it could have been 10, and this weekend if it were not for Liverpool thankfully being relieved to mark their first win of the season and switching off, they could have quite easily made it 15. The tactics and formation put us down a blind alley everytime we went forwards, nothing has changed in 6 games. QPR and West Ham are 2 of the worst teams in the league and he wasnt even brave enough to go and attack them. Be honest and look at the fixtures and say with the team he is putting out where you would like to think 3 points is coming from, coz I'm looking at mid november, echoes of the 2005 season all over, no new striker added, but a load of lower league donkies (especially TURNER).

  • What a pitiful performance, with the money they had they should have held onto that scottish git, maybe we could not understand half of what he said but he did get some performance out of the players he had. Now we are supposed to have players but who only turn up for their paycheck it seems. Better do something quick otherwise its back to the lower leagues, and I don't mean the championship either..

  • The only thing better about the score line was that City scored twice. Goal difference the same[minus 3] and 'Pool scored 5. This was never going to be a 'must' win game against a relegation rival, but the result could hit the players very hard, as it was a mauling. Bassong needed back quickly. RB must replace LB, DF needed to control the passing. AP to replace AS to attack the defence, and wins needed against sides near the bottom with us. At present I'd settle for staying up on goal difference - but that will only happen if other sides get smashed by 6 or 7 at this rate.

  • I am beginning to think Hughton is a one trick pony and is nothing but a defensive coach. When you look back at his managerial record it looks to me and I stand to be corrected that most of the players he bought at Newcastle and Birmingham were of a defensive nature and that is certainly the case at Norwich. I think as a manager the man is flawed and lacks experience. No wonder Mcnally and the rest of the board have gone quiet, I think personally they has made one big boo boo. Championship here we come.

Expect more to come in next few games. Off course, if tonights result goes the wrong way, we could be bottom of the league at 10 tonight!

  • We have had a reasonably good start to the season in terms of who we were down to play. We end up just three points. No excuses the QPR and West Ham games were ones we needed to win if we want to stay up. We have not even started to play the BIG boys yet. HOW CAN WE BOUNCE BACK WHEN WE HAVE NOT EVEN STARTED ? the problem is most games this season we have not turned up either only the poor performances by other teams has made us look respectable. I as many supporters this season are fed up with these excuses and bolstering cry's we will bounce back. The question is when? as a team we seriously lacking in all departments especially for the premiership. Holty has lost the plot and should have gone also Houghton was as it appears a hurried choice for manager when perhaps longer time spent and a little more money in that department would be better. Get your act together city and soon or my 50 years of supporting you will die win something would be nice!

Apart from miserable supporters there isn't much difference between our position last year and this year. On a separate note I see that the great prospect we lent to Huddersfield couldn't play yesterday through injury. Maybe Hughton was right?
