• Norwich City

7 John Ruddy: Pressure-relieving save from Mikel Arteta late on. Looked secure whenever Arsenal delivered from wide areas.

7 Russell Martin: Early difficulties but more than had the measure of Lukas Podolski by the close of play.

7 Michael Turner: The big man needed a big performance. Thudded a header wide in first half, but a vast improvement.

8 Sebastien Bassong: Already the lynchpin of this defence. Cool under pressure. Fantastic anticipation to sense danger.

7 Javier Garrido: Disciplined shift in a watertight backline. Largely curbed his attacking instincts to frustrate Arsenal’s counter thrusts.

8 Alex Tettey: Looks the real deal in that destructive midfield role. Has injected a dynamism into a key area of the side.

8 Bradley Johnson: Perfect foil alongside Alex Tettey. Muscular presence to nullify Arsenal’s central two. Roamed forward as well.

7 Elliott Bennett: Measure of the man’s impact now is how much he is missed when out of the side. Excellent defensive instincts.

8 Wes Hoolahan: Technique, vision, passing ability all as standard; and plenty of defensive responsibility. Immense.

7 Anthony Pilkington: Set the tone early on with a fearsome strike just wide. City’s main attacking outlet in the first period.

8 Grant Holt: Goal owed everything to his predatory instincts but he monstered Arsenal’s centre backs all game.

Subs: Snodgrass (for E Bennett) 5, Morison (for Holt) 5, R Bennett (for Hoolahan) 5

• Arsenal

5 Vito Mannone: Parried Alex Tettey’s shot back into Grant Holt’s path for the defining act. Lacks a commanding presence

6 Carl Jenkinson: Highly-rated full-back. Tough times against Anthony Pilkington early on. Grew into the game.

6 Per Mertesacker: no questioning the German’s pedigree but again looked uncomfortable trying to thwart norwich’s captain.

6 Thomas Vermaelen: Class defender but strangely subservient against the all-action Holt for the sides’ second consecutive contest.

6 Andre Santos: Looked better going forward during Arsenal’s bright early spell. Little protection offered from Lukas Podolski.

6 Aaron Ramsey: never able to escape the suffocating presence of City’s two midfield warriors. Much better player than this.

7 Mikel Arteta: The pick of Arsenal’s creative players. Tested John Ruddy late on and looked the only one capable of mixing it.

6 Gervinho: He strikes you as the inconsistent type. This was very definitely one of his more frustrating shifts.

6 Santi Cazorla: Arsenal’s main man looked jaded after his World Cup stint with the Spanish. Always on the fringes.

6 Lukas Podolski: one superb swerving early strike suggested he was in the mood. Ran out of ideas like his team mates.

6 Olivier Giroud: outnumbered and physically dominated by City’s two centre-backs. Big shoes to fill for the Gunners’ new striker.
