Norwich City striker Simeon Jackson’s World Cup dream has ended – after Canada were thrashed 8-1 by Honduras in San Pedro Sula.

The reward for Honduras is a place in the six-country final qualifying round in Concacaf.

The 25-year-old Jackson, winning his 33rd cap, played for 62 minutes before he was substituted with his side already 6-0 down.

Canada needed a draw to advance to the final stage of qualifying, but they were 4-0 down at half-time in the Estadio Olimpico in front of a capacity crowd of about 40,000.

And Honduras were six goals ahead before veteran Canada striker Iain Hume struck their only goal after 76 winutes with a superb free-kick that he bent around the wall and in off the inside of the post.

Honduras still had time to score two more goals and Canada coach Stephen Hart admitted: “We were horrible. It’s disturbing to me that the team fell apart.”

Canada, ranked No 61 in the world, have reached the World Cup just once — in Mexico in 1986.

It was their worst result since an 8-0 defeat in Mexico in 1993.
