Norwich City sign Kansas City striker Kei Kamara

Norwich City have signed Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara on loan for the rest of the season, subject to receiving immigration clearance.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The 28-year old has now been granted clearance to play by the relevant footballing authorities and the deal has been agreed between the two clubs and the MLS.

Kamara requires approval to come and work in the country for Norwich City from the UK Border Agency.

City boss Chris Hughton said: “I’m delighted to bring Kei to the football club, one of Major League Soccer’s best players over the last few seasons.

“There is no doubt it is a big jump to make into the Premier League, but it is an exciting challenge both for him and us here at the club to prove his talent.

“Kei also adds some valuable competition upfront alongside the current striking options we have here at the club.”

The 28-year-old is one of three players to score nine or more goals in each of the last three seasons and is thought to be in the last year of his contract with the MLS, who own the rights for the players.

Kamara said: “It is a very bittersweet day as I am excited to achieve one of my goals, which was to play in the EPL.

“Being such a positive person, I trust in this decision and am thankful for the opportunity to play at Norwich City through the end of their season. I am grateful for the coaching staff at Sporting KC and especially Peter (Vermes) for believing in me and helping me through this process.”

Born in Sierra Leone, Kamara emigrated to the United States as a teenager and has spent the last eight years playing for various professional clubs, with Kansas securing his services from Houston Dynamo in 2009.

A full international for Sierra Leone with 14 appearances and two goals to his name, he had a trial with Stoke City in December but was not offered a deal.

  • Far too much negativity. Welcome to N.C.F.C. Kei, let's hope you get the Border Control clearance and have a thriving and productive stay at our football club, whether that's just for this season or more afterwards. Thank you Kansas City & the MLS for giving him and us this opportunity.

  • Lets give this guy a chance and welcome him to Norwich. IF he scores one PL goal he has probably repaid the loan fee, we can't lose, plus if we get Becchio as well then we are in a stronger bargaining position with Celtic over Hooper, I.e we are not so desparate

  • What a major coup - the board didn't even have the courage of their convictions to actually buy the player. It would seem that this move is a complete shot in the dark with little chance of success. For goodness sake buy someone of proven ability - this is supposed to be premiership football not a haven for has beens and never will bes!!!!

  • Everyone constantly criticises Steve Morison but seems to forget he gets no service at all when he is in the team. He has become subject to the Norwich boo-boys and constant rants from supporters who post on this site. Nobody was moaning about him last year when he scored winners vs Sunderland, West Brom, QPR, Newcastle and equalisers vs Arsenal and Blackburn. What short memories you all have. Lets hope Kamara andor Becchio are given a fair chance and dont become replacement victims of the boo-boy supporters and posters on this site. Any striker is only as good as the service he receives, which in Norwich's case is poor service.

  • I have to say I'm not convinced by the Hooper proposition. People have posted about Kamara having no top level experience, is that any different from Hooper? I remember Ally McCoist scoring a lot of goals for Rangers. But it as to be pointed out that when you played for Rangers then the team was so much on top that it was impossible not to get say 7 or 8 gilt edged chances per game (if not more) so statistically he was bound to score a couple every game or so, I hope but am not sure that Hooper would be different.

  • Whilst I am not a fan of Hoot's timid approach to winning football matches, I think this is a great move. If the guy cuts it, we keep him, if he doesn't he goes. He sounds keen, will be an unknown quantity to PL defences and perhaps his enthusiasm will rub off on his new team mates. Well done guys and I hope Becchio follows him to The Carra.

  • This just was put up on the Sporting KC website by the Club CEO: So, I wanted to write you a note about Kei. I’m sure you know by now we’ve agreed to loan Kei to Norwich City in the EPL until early May. I’ve just returned from Tucson and had the opportunity to be very involved in this, and I spoke with Kei over the past couple days as we worked through things. I need to preface this by telling you that we love having Kei on our team. He’s performed, connected with fans and created a life for himself in Kansas City that will last long after he’s done with soccer. One of the frustrating things for fans, but a fact of life, is that our players will have aspirations to play in the top leagues throughout the world – most especially the EPL. If we are to continue on the track of being a well-respected organization for player development, then it will be inevitable that teams will come after our players and that our players will have desires to go test their talents in these top leagues. As an organization, we are never going to begrudge them for it – and we certainly don’t in this case with Kei. We’ve committed to you that our goal is to produce a consistent, championship-caliber team over the long-term. We’ve been outspoken early this year that an MLS championship is our primary goal. In light of today’s news, nothing has changed in our expectations. It’s situations like this that test our organization’s ability to maximize the opportunity to meet both of those goals, while working with our players’ aspirations and professional development. Strange as it may seem, we think this gives us the best opportunity to keep Kei long-term. As much as he loves Kansas City, Kei deeply wants to experience the EPL and this is his chance. So we’ve partnered with him to give him the chance to do so for the first 10 games this season. The loan proceeds will allow us to reinvest in our existing young core of players and solidify their futures in the club. In the event Kei is signed by Norwich City, our club would receive a very fair transfer fee that again, we’d use to reinvest in our club. If Kei returns in May, his contract is extended and we will work in earnest to sign him to a deal that keeps him with the club through the end of his career. If we hadn’t have done this, Kei would have left at the end of the year as a “free” player, similar to Roger Espinoza this past year. So the risk we take is allowing him to go for 10 games this year, in hopes of getting him for years to come. I’m not going to say to you that “this is a business,” and you have to get used to it. I know it’s not a business to you, it’s very personal. It is to us as well. We get to know these young men very well, and do what we can to create a partnership that encourages them to connect with the community and hopefully stick around for the long-term. We don’t like it when they go. I understand the impact this has on your kids as well – to the nth degree. My seven- and six-year-olds, Katherine and Charlie, don’t ask me, “Why did they let him go?” They ask me, “Why did YOU let him go?” so I get it….. We want Kei to continue to be successful. He deserves it for the hard work he’s put in. There’s a chance we won’t get him back, and if so, we can all cheer him on in the EPL and be proud to call him one of ours. But if he comes back, I know we’ll all welcome him with #heartshapedhands.

You never know, he might turn out to be the best bit of business going so far... I guess it is easy to go straight for the negatives. Question is, how does Kamara fit into Hughton's plans? One of two things will have to happen; 1) Holt will have to be rested, or 2) Hughton will have to change his formation. Neither are likely to happen!

  • I'm not usually this negative but after the spurs performance I think it will take a lot more than KK to keep us up this season. The hustle and bustle of the first half gave way to defensive direness in the second. Unless we play with 2 up front (even occasionally) we just wont win many games. Much as I think Hughton has done a decent job so far we really do need to be more offensive. The defense and Bunn had a good game today but we will always struggle when there is only 1 outlet upfront . I'm trying to be hopeful that this will change with signing more strikers. I still think sacking Hughton right now would be a massive mistake. Heres hoping for a good result against QPR. OTBC

Had City drawn thanks to a late penalty or won 1-0 because of a "did it cross the line?" goal, would there have been the urgency to make the changes to the squad necessary for City to avoid a relegation battle next season, assuming things do not pick from now on.

That has to be an improvement on Morrison this season (and I have defended him a lot). On another note, I have just heard Hughton say that other than the Becchio deal, he is not expecting anything else to happen. Perhaps he has given up on Hooper and Wolfswinkle (That name still makes me chuckle) for the time being. Maybe these signings are designed to get us through to the close season when we can look to bring someone like Hooper in. OTBC and in HWT. I still think that we will be ok.
