The Norwich City midfielder was the big addition to Giovanni Trapattoni’s 26-man squad for the friendly at Lansdowne Road on 14 November.

The squad will be shortened to 23 players before meeting up in Dublin on November 11.

Trapattoni said: “I have decided to choose a provisional 26-man squad for this game due to injury doubts over players. As we have a break from competitive games for a few months, I am using this fixture as an opportunity to try out new players and view their potential.”

Hoolahan made his one and only appearance for his country as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Columbia at Craven Cottage in May 2008.

• Squad: Westwood, Forde, Randolph, Coleman, O’Shea, O’Dea, Kelly, McShane, Ward, Duffy, Clark, Delaney, Andrews, McCarthy, Fahey, Meyler, Whelan, Clifford, Keogh, McGeady, McClean, Brady, Hoolahan, Doyle, Cox, Walters.

  • Well said, Pa! As a vertically challenged person myself I have long believed in the intellectual superiority of short people. Albert Einstein, Woody Allen, Chris Hughton, Ernie Wise, Peter Crouch, to name but two. Now the superannuated neapolitan nitwit, Trapper Tony, needs to work out for himself that our Wessi is not a central defender nor a midfield enforcer!

  • That's if he even makes the bench! If those managers sat a little higher in the stands instead of at grass level, they would realise who does the work. It's not always the 6ft plus players who often have small brains, but shorter ones with bigger brains!

  • Exactly! Delighted for Wes but they'd better not send him back injured.
