Neil Adams has no fears about throwing his young guns into Championship battle.

Josh Murphy led the way with a goalscoring brace in the midweek Capital One Cup win over Crawley Town that was notable for the inclusion of nine academy products in Adams’ squad.

The City chief accepts Murphy is making a persuasive case for inclusion to feature more prominently with league points at stake.

“He is in the mix. I spoke to him on Thursday and I told him he was excellent,” said Adams. “He has got every chance. He has done all he can do and when you get a chance in the side you have to grab it and he did in spades with two goals, one left foot, one right and he is pushing hard now. Had we lost the cup game I would probably have been criticised for playing such a young team but I had every confidence in them. I thought they could do the job and I still felt that team was strong enough to win the game and so it proved. “Of course they will get the added benefit now. You take Kyle McFadden, he has had a senior game, I know he played a few minutes against Nice, but until you throw into a competitive fixture you can never be 100pc sure. It is how they react and I felt Kyle was excellent so the bonus was four or five of those lads experienced the occasion. We know if we need them we can call on them.”

  • I was surprised that N A was bold enough to put out the team he did against Crawley , knowing they were coming here to Giant-kill and on the back of having beaten the tractor-boys , i thought we'd see debuts from Cameron Jerome and Carlos Cuellar inserted into the standard winning team , but no , he Star-Trekked ( to Boldy go where no man has boldy gone before , boldy , in a welter of split infinitives ) All credit to him , and to the young'uns , excellent result . Cant wait to see Fork'andles in action , perhaps a cameo for him this afternoon ?

  • Only you MB could come up with that theory! No one else would have thought that. As for Dubya I think he's in Lesotho which is having a coup today I read. He leads a hazardous life does our Dubya!

  • We hear what Adams is saying but it is inevitable with Norwich that Murphy will return to the bench, despite the fact he has done more in a couple of matches than Redmond has achieved in over a year. I think Murphy should play today and Redmond given a reminder that he's not as good as he thinks he is.

  • Bogaz John; I suppose it is inevitable that any youngster who "has what it takes" will leave for a `Big Club` eventually. It`s like that; it`s just the way it is these days. The trick is to keep the production line... productive. Hopefully, the Academy will do that. If Josh goes (hopefully not for a long time yet) will Jacob go with him? Else, how will the Billybigboots Club know which one they`re getting? ;-) Play safe, have `em both. BUT - no BOGOF deal!!

  • Interesting that our young team performed and yet Man U's overpaid " stars" didn't. I think it comes down to attitude and we seem to have it in buckets this season compared to last year. I know winning makes everyone feel good but on the salaries these guys get you would think they would sweat blood to play. As for young Josh I would have his name first on any team sheet. He'll play for England one day ( but probably not as a City player)

  • That selection for the Crawley game showed an awful lot of confidence, both in the youngsters, but also in his own judgement. Thought Adams would be a great choice from the first day his name was mentioned, but must say even I'm surprised how quickly he has grown into it. Duck to water.

  • I think Neil is correct in saying that he would`ve got some brickbats had we lost that game. Fans still yearn for a Cup Run but, of course, they`d prefer promotion. Most would, anyway. But fair-minded people would not have been too harsh if the performance was as it was. It was a clever team selection; anchored by some steady old retainers and the two experienced new boys. Then the youngsters "did their thing". Neil well knows what they`re capable of. Early days yet, but really encouraging signs of flushing away the sludge of the previous régime. "2nd String" teams under The Unmentionable One looked disinterested. To be fair; they weren`t too clever under Lambo, either. But he delivered on the other front. Hughton delivered only despair. Ooops! Now I`ve mentioned him...

  • Now that's what I call refreshing. Wonder what He who must not be Named would have said? I hope Josh plays some part today - I think he deserves to.
