Neil Adams is in the business of construction not demolition in his bid to forge a Championship promotion-winning squad.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Norwich City boss knows the law of the jungle will apply over the closing weeks of the summer transfer scramble with a growing number of his personnel touted with Carrow Road exits. City sanctioned a club record deal for Robert Snodgrass last month and Adams accepts the Canaries’ resolve is likely to be tested again with John Ruddy, Leroy Fer, Nathan Redmond and Gary Hooper all the subject of reported interest from potential top flight suitors.

“There is only four weeks to the league season and I am sure there will be enquires for lads who were playing in the Premier League last season,” said Adams. “Unfortunately there comes a point in the Championship where if the offer is too good to turn down that is the situation we are now in – Robert Snodgrass being the example. Did I want to lose him? No. He had one year left on his contract and the money we received was good business.

“The reality is everyone has a price. If people are going to come in and the money is right then we have to look at it but we have stressed we don’t want to lose players and anything else at the moment is speculation. Clubs are bound to come looking for our best players. That is the unfortunate side of relegation; we would probably have been doing the same thing if we had stayed up.”

  • suffolk canary, I think I empathise with you there. Then, sometimes, I have a little outbreak of optimism. I go "All Dubai" ;-) I think, well Surman, Howson, Johnson, Hoolahan, Fer, Tettey not a bad midfield squad. Murphys, Redmond, E.Bennett decent `wingers`. Hooper, Winkel, Grabban, Becchio, Loza, Lafferty not a bad choice of strikers. Olsson, Garrido good left-backs. Right back...??? Turner, Bennett good CBs. Rudd, Ruddy quality `keepers. But something is niggling me. I don`t believe the Club believes. Hence all the patronizing BS we get. Mr. Risible Invisible McNally - Let`s be `avin` ya...

  • As a relegated team we have to expect to lose a few players but I'd be a lot happier to see a few decent Championship level players coming in particularly a central defender and a ball playing midfielder. I really want to see us storm the Championship but the overwhelming impression is of a team and management in disarray. Can anyone really see this team getting it together to win at Wolves and Portaloo Road?

  • That's just it Michigan! Everything is underwhelming from the managerial appointments and signings to the sound bites coming from within. I admit the "relegation is worse than death" was a wee bit over animated, but I would like to hear maybe half of the gusto attributed to our promotion push. Maybe a suitor would find our club more attractive with Mick and Del paid off. Mcnally's silence is starting to hurt my ears!

  • A lot of really interesting and amusing thoughts in the poasts here, confirming (as everyone knows) NCFC fans are not stupid like the management press releases seem to think we are. I just want to see a strong plan, with strong statements around it, giving everyone confidence the management team wants to take us straight back up. If we truly are up for sale "the quick coat of magnolia" needs to be this strong football and business plan, with very firm and high prices on the players that are key to the plan. Maybe once the season starts the management team talk will be results on the field, but so far I for one am less than underwhelmed.

While I understand its a friendly etc....I still was left thinking there isnt anyone i'd be over the top worried about if I was scouting for say Wolves, ITFC etc ahead of playing us. Hopefully it all comes together ahead of new season and we nab a few inspired signings before we kick off against Wolves.

  • …..Arter Dinner Time DUBAI!.... My question is do we really want to keep them?....Most of them got over paid for doing very little....they are still costing money ….probably more than those that did put some commitment in....and I'll bet that made for an unpleasant atmosphere in the dressing room.....They got us into the Championship....couldn't careless if we stay there ….as long as the bank gets the cash!....Neil Adams has one hell of a job making them all pull together, and the more bad apples we get shot of the better!.....COLIN! That's nearly a full team of misfits you mention...City won't even notice if most of them depart!.....

  • In theory I take your point, but lacked any bottle? To be fair they had 4 extremely hard games to face (add the fact Man Utd typically got a new manager just in time to play us)....and against Fulham we did everything except score (despite lots of trying!). Not sure lack of bottle at the end of the season is fair. More a lack of bottle from the previous manager in the 1 billion games before that where it didnt seem to matter if we played Chelsea or Hull....we played in the same negative, defensive, dont let a goal in before we think about trying to score way.

Just hope the sum of the whole is enough to see a few winning games and not sink any further. At the moment I see no chance of promotion. I hope I am wrong.

  • Best solution is to stick a very high price tag on players like John Ruddy, Leroy Fer, Nathan Redmond and Gary Hooper. Stick a £12mil price tag on each and leave it at that. They helped to get us into the Chump so they can help to get us out ! Anyway, £12mil is peanuts for a PL player these days, so, if clubs are not prepared to cough up then let's keep them. We can't have our best assets being sold off for peanuts. If they are sold off 'on the cheap' fans will rightly start to question the commitment and sincerity of the board and the management. Come on DMcN & NA time to show you mean business !

So a few weeks ago we were told we "don't have to sell a single player"..but now it's "everybody has their price".....A bit of "double-think" worthy of Orwell's 1984, another of my English Lit O-level books. • Every time I see a statement about transfer policy it has changed, always subtly and at times almost indiscernible. Remember how in Animal Farm there was a revolution that was for the betterment of all animals. The motto was "Four legs good, two legs bad." Then, like the football board giving academy jobs to the boys, the pigs took over and soon the puzzled incumbents read on the notice board, "Two legs good, four legs bad." Some could not even see it had changed.

  • Not having to sell and not selling are two different things. If a club puts out that statement it lets bidders know we won't accept anything other than a good deal for our players. It's a common sense thing to do. Wolves did it when they went down and got big fees for Jarvis and Fletcher. Likewise, players will publicly state that they are happy to stay. That doesn't mean they won't want to go if and when a club has a bid accepted by Norwich. They will also state their willingness to stay so that they can get loyalty bonuses from the club on their departure, which they lose if they are seen to be agitating for a move.

  • Lets all face facts, since Agents have been allowed to freely operate, many players are constantly being touted around clubs. As soon as we were relegated, those agents will have been circling around our best players like hungry wolves hoping to make a packet. If any player is told he is wanted by a club further up the ladder, then his head is bound to be turned as he will likewise smell a pay rise as well as a juicy transfer fee. NCFC simply have to go along with the game but identify who they in turn will try to entice to our club to fill the void. How many of the current players will we expect to be here in 5 years time for example, football is an ever changing commodity and that includes managers and players.

So I ask the questions of; is this an offer we can't refuse as we will obviously be receiving less for Fer than what we paid!!!! Secondly what's happened to the boards statement of; "we don't need to sell". Again the board decide to do everything on the cheap!

On a more serious note I am wondering how much all these football management posts is costing us? It seems strange to me that with our income dropping we increase our wage bill for off-field management, when surely the priority is to spend any spare cash on player recruitment - as McNally is always telling us, every spare penny goes on that. Really?

Exception to the `Gunn Law` - Holty, of course, and Michael Nelson wasn`t a bad ol` boy at L1 level. Someone within NCFC had better decide exactly who is required and ensure they stay as part of a strong exciting football and business plan to bring EPL football back to Carrow Rd in 12 months. I think we must expect the departure of probably 2 strikers, but which ones? Hooper is most likely to command a decent fee, Winkel least likely - unless\until he rebuilds his reputation. Becchio may be of interest to other Championship sides - but he could come back to haunt us. Hooper will want Prem footy. `Arry has loadsa dosh in his pooch`s off-shore account in The Cayman Quadrangle, and QPR are called The Hoops. All there is left to do is give Hoops the squad number 88.
