Norwich City’s highly-rated wide player Josh Murphy is ready to tear up the Championship.
The 19-year-old burst onto the big stage last season with a stunning goal in a Capital One Cup win at Watford before making his Premier League debut at Manchester City.
Murphy ended up playing 13 games in the Canaries’ senior ranks and he is determined to play an even bigger role in the Championship fightback under new boss Neil Adams.
“This is a massive year for me. I played 13 or 14 games, I had a taste of the Premier League and I am hungry for more action,” he said. “This season I am just going to, firstly, go and fight for my place and then when I get that I want to stay in the team and show the fans what I can do and hopefully tear up the Championship.
“I feel like I can do a job and the manager does or he wouldn’t have put me in the team. The gaffer played me against Fulham and Liverpool over the run-in and that showed he wasn’t scared to play me.
“If I am given the chance I feel I can prove to myself and the fans I can do the job. Rather than people looking at my age I want them to see me scoring goals and getting the fans off their feet and trying to bring success to this club.”
The England Under-19 international admitted it was a steep learning curve mixing with the very best.
“It is weird. Maybe the week before you are watching them on the television and wondering what it would be like to play against them and the next you are grappling and grabbing with (Steven) Gerrard and (Luis) Suarez and players like that,” he said. “It is just an unbelievable feeling and when you watch it back you almost have to ask yourself, ‘Why am I running around the pitch there with those players?’ It is surreal but I wouldn’t change that experience for the world.
“The Premier League is where we all want to be. We have players in this club who are Premier League standard and we should be there.
“It’ll be a tough season, a lot of fixtures and a physically demanding season but we have shown a lot of togetherness so far in pre-season.”
