Wes Hoolahan’s hopes of adding to his one Republic of Ireland cap under current national team boss Giovanni Trapattoni look more remote than ever after Chelsea’s Conor Clifford was given a surprise call-up for Friday night’s World Cup qualifier against Germany.
The Norwich City forward has been consistently overlooked by the Italian since making his one full international appearance against Colombia at Craven Cottage in 2008, and was not included in the squad for the Euro 2012 finals.
Clifford, 21, who was on loan at League One club Portsmouth earlier in the season and has played only at that level, was added to Trapattoni’s squad as midfield cover ahead of the Group C game in Dublin and the trip to the Faroe Islands next week.
“We decided on Clifford because it is the second time he has come with us,” the Republic’s assistant manager, Marco Tardelli, said after training yesterday. “I saw him some times and for me he is a very good player.”
Asked if the 30-year-old Hoolahan had been considered, Tardelli replied: “We look to the future and Clifford is the future.”

Looking at the way both teams did in the Euros i think both men are far better out of it. Neither team has a manager I'd particularly want but at least Trapattoni has won things at a high level. Roy only seems to be famous for speaking several languages and blurting out team secrets on the London Underground. Perhaps England should try an Italian manager, or possibly a Swede?

Sorry to most city fans but as a fellow supporter, but have you ever thought Wes is not good enough? I feel he does not now bring much to the team, and is a luxury we do not need at present but hard workers

From a purely selfish NCFC viewpoint I'm glad they didn't pick him. Last thing we need is Hoolahoop injured. He's about the only playmaker we've got. I feel sorry for him personally. He's bound to want to play for his country.

Judging from Ireland's less-than-inspiring performances earlier this year, they need a 'Hoolahan', either Wes or someone else with some flair, confidence and the ability to turn a game around with a moment of brilliance. It's unbelievable that he's been overlooked again.

Spark (bright?) if you had not noticed both Tardelli and Trapattoni are Italian, the Irish (who live in Ireland) think Wes is a great player and can't understand why he isn't playing for Ireland. But then we can't understand why he is not the first name on Hughton's team sheet either?

They don't look to the future, they look to be idiots. If they looked to the future they would have had him in the team a long time ago...Trappatoni was lucky to keep his job due to sticking to old players, so this is just an attempt at winning over the well and truly justified doubters whilst getting at Wes even more.
