Norwich City’s derby date at Ipswich Town set for a Sunday switch

Norwich City’s East Anglian Derby at Ipswich Town is set to be moved back to a Sunday, according to reports south of the border.

The Championship fixture was originally scheduled for Saturday, August 23 when the initial Football League fixtures were announced earlier this month.

However, the latest meeting between East Anglia’s bitter rivals appears set to follow the pattern of most recent derby fixtures – with a noon kick-off on Sunday of the August back holiday weekend, at the request of Suffolk police.

The two clubs will meet for the first time since City’s 5-1 victory at Portman Road in April 2011 which, rather out of keeping, was held on a Thursday night due to the Easter programme. Before that, the last 16 East Anglian derbies had been played with a Sunday lunchtime kick-off since the autumn of 1998 – when Norwich won 1-0.

However, there has been no confirmation of any change – and with rail services from Norwich to Ipswich set to be disrupted on the rearranged date, there may yet be some discussions to go before that confirmation is forthcoming.

A swich for the return fixture at Carrow Road on Saturday, February 28, also seems likely.

A Suffolk police spokesman said: “Suffolk Constabulary can confirm that it has requested the Football League move the Ipswich versus Norwich fixture to lunchtime on Sunday, August 24. The request stems from a recommendation contained in a report examining the policing of the Ipswich v Norwich fixtures in 2011.

“The report concluded that future derby matches should be held on a Sunday lunchtime to minimise the potential for disorder and disruption to the local community.

“However, the request to move the fixture has yet to be confirmed.”

  • You must have friends in high places, Mattias? Call in a few favours, pull a few strings. You cannot just stand by and tolerate this gross injustice. Refuse to prepare big brother Luciano`s osso buco. Ban Machianalli from Mum`s Little Kitchen. Get arch-insider Paddy on board. You have my support - as long as you promise to wear it ;-)

  • I have. My worry though (an on going dispute with NCFC) is out of my regular group of 4, the club have messed up 1 of our groups points. We always go to most away games together, yet 1 member of the group has a massively lower tally and the club refuse to take responsibility for the mess up. There is no way he should be on lower points than the rest of us so it drops us down virtually to the bottom of group system they've set up. We may as well wait for general sale if you get me. It'll be a ballot for us for certain which is such a shame. Unless we either a:leave a man behind (not going to happen) or attain someone elses customer number for that game (wont happen either as everyone wants to go) so we are in trouble lol. We wasnt too bothered at first because we figured the demand wouldnt be too great for all the other games we will attend this season but then we remembered the ipswich game demand will be huge.

  • Don't despair Matty, the priority points system accumulated from away games will see you get a ticket I'm sure ....... providing you've been travelling away to support NCFC further from armslength from your keyboard ;-) See you there !

  • Definitely will be a noon kick-off on the Sunday. same goes for our home match at end of Feb. Probably neither will be televised as a result, as the Sunday slots are used for the Prem.
