Norwich City’s on-loan keeper Declan Rudd is learning all about life in the lower leagues during a turbulent stint at League One club Preston.

Rudd made his Lilywhites’ debut in a 3-1 defeat at Yeovil last week that was to prove manager Graham Westley’s final match in charge at Deepdale.

The City academy product, who also made his England U21 bow earlier this month in a 4-0 friendly win over Sweden’s U21s, retained his Preston place for a winning home debut against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Preston have since unveiled former Leeds and Huddersfield boss Simon Grayson as their new manager and Rudd is determined to remain a permanent fixture during the rest of his spell which runs until the end of the current season.

“It’s been good. I have enjoyed it and I have been working hard in training,” he said. “I’ve got to know the lads and they are a great bunch of boys. Everyone helps each other out and it is a great place to be. It has gone well. Results may not have gone our way, but I don’t think we are far off it. I was really pleased to get the first one under my belt (at Yeovil).

“I am here to train, get some games and help the team if I can. The gaffer makes the decisions and whatever he feels is right you accept.

“Every team and club wants to be successful. I witnessed that two years on the bounce at Norwich and I think Preston deserve to be in the Championship. They are definitely not a League One set up.

“This is my first time away from Norwich and Preston is a massive club with great history. It couldn’t be a better club to start with and it’s been good to get out to a big club.”

Rudd revealed City’s England goalkeeping coach Dave Watson played a big part in his desire to test himself in the Football League.

“We both sat down and we said it was time to go out there and see what is about and learn from being at a different club with different players and different coaches,” he said. “It was a mutual decision and luckily enough for me Preston showed interest and that was the decision made for me.

“Dave Watson came in during the summer (at Norwich) and he has worked us hard for the last six months. It is great working with him. I feel like I have benefitted from him because he is one of the best in the country and he works with John Ruddy, Joe Hart and the senior keepers.”

  • I'm just glad that the Pink Un has come up with a story that is interesting for once. I wish they'd tell us more about the players out on loan and update us on those who are injured rather than the usual re-hashed non-news.

  • So Hughton did do a good thing in getting camp in as cover to allow declan to go out on loan. SHOCK! HORROR! Where are all the "lets field a team of goalies her her her derrrrp" idiots now!? Declan is going to be an AWESOME keeper.

  • "begging to be proved wrong" ahh, that timeless phrase that just shouts "I want to have an edgy opinion on something that I know deep down is wrong but when it doesn't happen I will just hide from my original opinion". It really is up there with "I'm not negative I'M A REALIST" hahaha that one gets me every time. I just want to paint NEGATIVE on these people foreheads

  • Ta, alan. I sort of guessed it meant something like that but was unsure. My original attempts to engage you on the topic were blocked\disappeared and touched on the subject of "Street patois" generally. Piranha, if I am ignorant of something I would like to know, I tend to politely ask somebody who does know. Is that a problem? I love you too. Sorry to hear about your incontinence problem.

My grandad, and dad both born n raised in Saff London, have used that expression since the good ol days when you could leave your back door open, and a couple of friendly likely lads, who was good to their muvver, used to keep the peace with their own Eastend code...

  • FF & JR went out on loan to get 1st team games, they could not get at there club due to being down the order. If we had not brought in Bunn then Dec could be getting the games at NCFC, we brought in 4th & 5th keeper in before Dec went out, so by not loaning Dec out in the summer Hughtons decision to bring in Bunn is wrong.

  • Good morning, alan clark. I don`t know what "mugging off" means either! On another board, MBA opined that I had a gift for English, ancient and modern. A very kind comment but not really deserved - I just like the English language! Perhaps I have an aversion, or even a blindspot when it comes to Laaandon "Street Patois". Maybe `cos raaand these parts there`s a lot of "Professional Londoners" priming the pub music system with wall-to-wall Chas `n` Dave while discussing everything in a contrived Mockney rhyming slang. All `apples n pears`, `Ponies`, `Borassic Lint`, `Uncle Dick`, `Richard the Third` and `Brahms & Liszt` etc. Funniest part is that the Chelsea "fans" are the ones doing the `rabbiting` about Chas `n` Dave, when those two guys are reputedly Spurs "supporters"! Gercha! Seriously, what does "mugging off" mean?? ;-)

It has to be an educational issue, I`m (not) afraid to say. More homework, indeed. lol, Scared old Person (Guffaw).

It's my opinion you fool , the reason we engage in conversation is , essentially , to find out the opinion of others . The real beauty of an opinion is that it can be changed after hearing the opinion of others . Democracy at work .

  • Im not quite 32 and I have no idea what 'mugged you off' means? I still do not think we needed to bring in Bunn and Camp, one of them yes if Dec was to go out on loan. Camp as free emergency cover does no harm as long as he is below Steer in the pecking order. for me we started with 3 good keepers, one got injured so Dec should then have had his shot with Steer for back up, whats the rubbing about getting lower league experience? why David De Gea is 22 was chosen by Man U.

Get a mind and test the theory. Or accept differing opinions. Your opinions would be respected if not accompanied by such hysterical hyperbole and insults.
