Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio has ruled out a fresh move for Norwich striker Chris Martin – with the Italian claiming Martin is lining up a Championship switch.

The 24-year-old returned to his parent club at the weekend after spending an extended loan spell at the League One play-off hopefuls. Martin’s current Norwich deal expires in the summer and with Chris Hughton omitting the striker from his latest 25-man Premier League squad list, the former Canaries’ academy prospect has been linked with Derby.

Di Canio is no longer interested in a potential West Country return when the emergency loan window opens later this week after Martin scored once in 12 appearances for the Robins.

“Absolutely not. He took one month to get fit and see him as an athlete as he was in the past. Even if I had an intention to keep him, in the last few days before the transfer window finished, he said to me he had a chance or he still has a chance to move to a different club – maybe the Championship,” said Di Canio. “How and why do I persuade a player who was telling me before he desperately wanted to stay and then in the last few days maybe he has the chance to go somewhere else. Thanks to him for what he has done. He scored one goal, he won one penalty when we were already on top with Tranmere, he challenged one ball at Bournemouth but in 12 games it was very, very poor in some way.

“I was sure he would give something more until the end because he’s got quality and I believe that I could help him, but once he told me there is a chance I thought – even if he lost this chance – I didn’t want to keep him.

“The fact he had already thought about a move to another place that is not for me.”

A while back a chance miss-spelling of "pluck" as "puck" led to a Global debate about the merits of "A Midsummer Night`s Dream"! All good! ;-)

That`s right, blackdog, I think it was1915 when Talbot House opened. Sort of a Salvationist bent to the ethos & apparently a lot of servicemen got involved. Btw, I`m not that old - it was what my father-in-law told me, and even he`s too young to remember that 1st hand! Young Christopher`s lamp must be the one right at the enemy front; with the teeniest-weeniest of flames. Of all our recent Academy boys, he`s had by far the greatest opportunity to make the grade. Our loss is Beccles & District LVA`s "gain". Looks like we won`t even get the price of a round of drinks (or boxing) out of it now. Perhaps Ruder`s "Tweedledee" jibe was not so far off after all?

Strikers only need a flash of brilliance and a couple of goals for the confidence to come back. I remember Chris' premier debut all those years ago when he seemed destined for great things (like Jason Shackell). I think if PL had not left last Summer he would have shifted him but I guess CH gave him that last chance in case a change of management would be the catalyst for change. In ten years time Chris will be full of regrets; what about a few sessions now with a sports psychologist? Having said that I think Di Canio's comments stink of sour grapes. It wasn't that long ago he was offering to fund a longer loan for Chris from his own pocket.

Swindons future does not look good at the mo, the only good thing there is Di'Canio. Cant blame Martin for not wanting to stay there. But his attitude does seem to suck, I like many do not know what his problem is. His NCFC career is done (18 months late!) perhaps a free to Ippy town

Hope that Derby still want him after PDiC's comments. it's a pity, as we all know he has more to offer, but like Dan Evans in UK tennis, it looks like it's probably never going to come because he won't put in the hard yards required.

Seems like a shooting in the foot job! Good to see that explanation from Brew about Toc H, like you I am also a quite senior citizen, served in the RAF when the bow and arrow was on the secret list. Just to add to what you said, the Toc H was founded in the First World War and was a Christian Organisation.

Chris Hughton said something about Chris Martin in an interview not so long ago that gave me the impression that he wasn't completely certain what to do with him. You get the impression that Di Canio sees something in him as well. Just seems to be a case of trouble getting to it through the layer of apparent dimwittedness that the guy seems to display.

Takes old gits like us to know stuff like that, Crab! My father-in-law was ex RAF, and he would on occasion growl "that bloke is as dim as a Toc H lamp". "Toc" was telegraphy code for "T" and the whole came from "Talbot House", a soldiers` club founded in Belgium. He told me all that about 30 years ago! I bet you knew all that. oh great lateral thinker. ;-)

That's a phrase I haven't heard in a decad or two MB - I wonder how many on here know what Toc H was - or why their lamp was dim! But agreed - young Chris never has done himself any favours has he? Such a waste of talent!

Looks PDiC was totally underwhelmed by young Christopher. It baffles me that a player with a fair bit of ability can work with the likes of Lambo, Holt and Wessi and not come out a better player. He either doesn`t care or he`s as dim as a Toc H lamp.
