Former Celtic striker Frank McGarvey feels both the club and Gary Hooper should set their sights higher than Norwich City’s bid for the forward.

Celtic this week rejected a second offer for the former Scunthorpe player and McGarvey said: “He could be getting a call-up into the England squad soon because he is scoring goals in the Champions League. For English clubs to offer £5million is an absolute joke.

“I wouldn’t go to Norwich. But, if you are getting double the wages you are getting at Celtic, it would be very difficult to say no.”

  • Why did city waste so much time on Hooper a player that Celtic where never going to sell and Norwich would never paid £7 million plus on any player it was just to keep the fans happy well done McNally the board must be proud of you not spend any money . Just hope we do not get into a scrap at the bottom and get relegated .but if we do then you can kiss good buy to £65million.

  • I rarely agree with Ged....but on one level he does seem to have a point. We need to show some ambition and drive. We need to recruit or really struggle. We need to show we are worth calling a Premiership club....and on the pitch we need to develop a plan B when all is going wrong.

  • I'll tell you what is a joke... Scottish football. The SPL was a two horse race now its just a one horse race. Playing each other 4 times a season??! Sounds loads better than anything in England. Oh yes, Hooper must be worth at least £10 million having scored against Helsingborgs and Spartak Moscow in the CL this season and regularly against the likes of St. Mirren and Ross County.......

  • I`d assumed "dogey" was some sort of `hip` urban street-talk! Honest. Or pertaining to the word meaning "cattle" from that old `Rawhide` song. Thanks for the translation. Are we going to declare if we are Norwich supporters or carry on with guerrilla warfare? At least Ged wears his troll uniform - so he can`t be shot as a spy.

  • Frank McGarvey is definitely a class act. He famously accused Rapid Vienna of cheating when they complained after one of their players was hit by a bottle at Parkhead. Not sure that we would have ever wanted him.

  • let's be honest, in many eyes it is a reasonable starting bid, but for the selling club it is a joke offer, what is worse is to go back with another offer which has hardly changed..That is a joke..The City board and McNally know only too well the way the transfer windows work, especially this january one. To offer that sort of money for the Countries (scotland) leading scorer is a joke. Their actions in the whole saga makes me think they weren't really serious. I know we are canaries, but not everything is Chirpy-Chirpy-Cheap-Cheap.. If you are not serious get out of that particular market

  • Calm down people...plenty more players out there! Honestly, get a grip. One min McNally is a hero, the next the club is a joke. Celtic will lose him for a snip in the summer and NCFC know it, so why not push the boundaries. You boys are the jokers.

  • True enough but the SPL is the highest standard he's played at for more than a couple of games. Remember that up until a fortnight ago a star defender up there was Michael Nelson.

  • What I remember about McGarvey is him leaving St Mirren for Liverpool in a blaze of publicity then going to Celtic less than a year later with his tail between his legs, moaning that his failure was Bob Paisley's fault!

  • It`s a tragedy, what`s happened to Scottish football. Back in the 70s I remember Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen all being decent teams, despite the pre-eminence of the Old Firm. That the OF trifled with the notion of baling out into English football (allegedly) sums up their ambition: "I`m all right Jack, you can pull the ladder up". The relationship between the fans of those two clubs would be toxic in our leagues. We do not need them and we never have.
