Norwich City midfielder Wes Hoolahan has been named in the Republic of Ireland’s provisional squad for September’s friendly against Oman and the opening 2016 European Championship qualifier against Georgia.

Hoolahan is in a 36-man party, released by Irish boss Martin O’Neil on Thursday morning, which will be trimmed ahead of the Dublin friendly against Oman on Wednesday, September 3 and the trip to face Georgia in Tbilisi four days later.

Former Norwich City midfielder Anthony Pilkington is also included in the provisional list, with both part of O’Neil’s touring squad during the summer tour to the USA prior to the World Cup in Brazil.

Hoolahan has been a key figure for the Canaries in the opening weeks of the new Championship season after being brought back into the fold by Neil Adams. The Dubliner recently signed a new longer-term deal keeping him at Carrow Road until 2016.

O’Neil is looking forward to his first competitive match in charge of the Republic since he was appointed last year, with the squad due to meet up on August 31.

“I have had the opportunity to work with the players since last November, and we are well prepared as we embark upon the first of our qualifiers next month,” he told the FAI web site. “Oman will provide a good test to start our trip before we travel to Tbilisi. We are focused on the task in hand, and look forward to the challenges ahead of us.”

Ipswich duo Daryl Murphy and Connor Sammon are also in the squad with City travelling to Portman Road in Saturday’s East Anglian Championship derby.

  • It`s so heartening to see the "Stew & Pa" road-show back... on the road. The Ant `n` Dec of the Senior Citizens` World. Stew has seen the advent of Autumn and is already casting his corneas of cupidity across Ma`s copious dumplings. This is normality, as we know it. On a serious note; I wonder just how much damage Hughton`s inadequacy has caused? I have a pal locally, a Crystal Palace fan, (`cos he came from those parts) and I hope the Hughton Horror and his Henchmen don`t slither in there. I`m not sure if I`d even wish him upon the Donkeyboys. He`s that bad. IMHO.

  • Fully agree PW. Becci has been drawing the pay but doesn't seem to be able to force himself into the squad, and Bunn is too good for 3rd choice so needs to be off. As for Bes, shame about the attitude, time to go.

  • Well deserved by Wes.Adams seems to me to be ticking off the inherited problems left for him by his predessor. The 3 Bs Bassong,Becchio and Bunn remain.Bunn's form in the EPL entitles him to better than 3rd choice keeper.Becchio is the invisible man.Maybe it's time for the magic words "by mutual consent".McNally may make someone an offer they can't refuse.

  • Be interesting, as this is a provisional squad, if Pilks makes the cut...

  • LYB your story, I believe, is correct. At NA's first squad meeting. I (and I believe Matt333) knew in April. Jonas followed him out of the door apparently. It has been posted a few times now. To the best of my knowledge it is true. Good riddance imo.

  • I think Bassong is a talented player let down by a terrible attitude. If Adams can force him to grow up and buckle down to training hard then he's a great asset. If Bassong isn't prepared to do that, then I guess he's just going to have to go for the best price we can get, but I think his career is on a downward trajectory of his own making as it stands.

  • I've also heard that Bassong said this. Whether its true or not is up for debate but if he did I don't want him anywhere near a Norwich shirt. The lack of interest in him tells its own story.

  • I'm getting a bit concerned with Stew ! First he wanted to try Ma's Dumplings according to Brew, and now it seems he's intruding on the plucking pheasants scene! Is nothing sacred any more?...Stew you stick to plucking pigeons! Pheasants is what I do ! And as for Ma's Dumplings, I will have to wait until after Christmas before I can have them on a plate again! What a delicious mouthful or two! As for Hoolahan! He would always have been the first name on my team sheet, working in the centre of the 'Chevron', and as things are at the moment between Johnson and Tettey, with two wingers feeding a Central striker! And Brew ,Bassong hasn't been bothered for a long time!

  • Ta, I tried to find norwichtalk, LYB, but computer said "no". (It is a moribund computer, its XP has expired). Yes, I had heard that "do I know you" thing from one or two people. If this story is true, then bridges need to be rebuilt or fond farewells should be made. Soon. It seems crazy to have a malcontent on megabucks around the place when Adams is trying to get the old team spirit back. This could be a sticky one. Those in the know will be lurking like vultures hoping for a `cheapo` - or a `freebie`. Bassong`s agent will be looking for profit maximization. Bass is getting paid anyway (presumably) so maybe he`s not bovvered?

  • Has been insanely good so far this season. Has such vision and pulls all the strings. It really is a vintage Wes we've got at the moment and he seems to be really enjoying his football, look at his face when Johnson scored yesterday on Tuesday! So chuffed for him!

  • I might as well tell you, but thought I'd put that in case it gets ethered. Allegedly, Bassong stood up in the first team meeting that Adams held last season and said 'Are we supposed to know who you are?'

  • MB, go and have a fish around on norwichtalk regarding Bassong. Pretty much the same reason from two different sources, both of which struck me as credible people.

  • Don't think Wes ever went out of favour with the Irish, just with our Irish (ex) manager. NA has done well to put a smile back on his face, as we all witnessed on Tuesday. Now we want to see how he celebrates scoring a goal of his own, hopefully this weekend.

  • …..Wes certainly had, and still has the continuous backing of one or two on these boards!.... Some times even people with short noses can't see beyond the end of them...and in the case of some 'there's none as blind as those that don't want to see!.....On the other story!...Fore your information Brew and Cutty,...I use two fingers! ….A technique I perfected under the Hughton reign!.....or as Pa might say “a poor plucker is a poor plucker whether he's a plucking Grouse or plucking pheasants”....How's that for a thought reading act?.....

  • Off-topic; does anybody, of non-peripheral status, have any inside information on what is happening with Bassong? From Hero to Hero. Captain to Cast-off. I assume he`s still being paid by NCFC, seemingly to do nothing. All gone quiet at the Karra Kremlin. Perhaps Carlos`s arrival will trigger some action? Bassong at twilight.
